BENSALEM 3, HARRY S TRUMAN 0
It was – according to coach Gary Kubik – “a Giuliana Pasquarella kind of day,” and with good reason. The senior turned in a dominant effort, scoring all three of Bensalem’s goals to collect her first hat trick.
Her goal in the second quarter broke a scoreless tie, and the Owls took that lead into halftime. Pasquarella scored a pair of goals less than three minutes apart in the third quarter for the 3-0 final. All three of her goals were unassisted.
Scoring Summary
1st quarter – No score
2nd quarter
B – Giuliana Pasquarella 7:45 (1-0)
3rd quarter
B – Giuliana Pasquarella 8:07 (2-0)
B – Giuliana Pasquarella 5:14 (3-0)
Coach Gary Kubik
–On Giuliana Pasquarella: “It was a Giuliana Pasquarella kind of day. On the day that phillyburbs.com runs a poll to see who the top field hockey player in Bucks County is, Giuls scores her first hat trick of the year. All of the goals were unassisted, but she had plenty of help from her friends.”
–The goals: “On the first goal, she took the ball around the 25-yard mark and drove down the left side for about a 10-foot flick into the back of the cage at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter. The second goal was a backhand from about 10 feet out to beat the Truman goaltender, Diandranique Modeste, with 8:07 left in the third quarter. Pasquarella’s third goal was a rocket from just inside the circle. Pasquarella had the ball on the left side of the circle, made one quick pull, and unleashed her shot right from the top. It was her, and her team’s, third and final goal of the day.”
–Props: “(Pasquarella’s) teammates played a big role today as well by both spreading out the field and collapsing on the Truman offense. Great offensive runs today, in particular, by sophomore Mollie Reilly and midfielder Keana Rodriguez. The Bensalem goalkeepers – Emily Adams, Brianna Swanson and freshman goalie Hailey Fricke – all played a part in the shutout.”
–Truman keeper: “Modeste played a fantastic game (in goal) today for Truman, stopping many shots from close range.”
–Praise for Truman: “Truman – under a new coach, Coach Compton – did a great job in playing the full sixty minutes and never relented. Her daughter and center back, Mackensie Compton, played a big part in slowing down the Owl offense.”
Up next: Bensalem (2-2, 1-2 SOL) will host Bristol in a non-league game Friday, and Harry S Truman (0-5, 0-3) will be on the road at Neshaminy Monday.

NESHAMINY 2, PENNSBURY 0
Just over two minutes into the game, Kasey Rieger turned a pass from Maddy Shtino into a goal, and the Redskins had an early 1-0 lead. They still led by just one goal heading into halftime, and it wasn’t until one minute remained in the third quarter that they added an insurance goal when Shtino scored with an Alayna Roscoe assist for the 2-0 final.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Redskins, who played their sixth game in just under two weeks.
Scoring Summary
1st quarter
N – Kasey Rieger from Maddy Shtino 12:36 (1-0)
2nd quarter – No score
3rd quarter
N – Maddy Shtino from Alayna Roscoe 1:00 (2-0)
4th quarter –No score
Coach Jamie Pinto on the game: “The second half we came out strong, we were able to play our game— we were able to generate offense, cause many corner opportunities and control the play.”
–Props: “Defensively, Alayna Roscoe and Taylor Tenaglia played well, stepping to the ball. In the second half, Maddy Shtino, Kasey Rieger and Ava Arbakov helped control the middle of the field and generate offense.”
Up next: Neshaminy (5-1, 3-0 SOL) will host Harry S Truman Monday, and Pennsbury (3-1, 2-1) will travel to Council Rock North Monday.

Home openers always feel different. The Falcon field hockey family was locked in and ready to go after supporting the JV team during the first half of their 1-0 victory against the ‘Skins.
Patiently waiting for the turf to be cleared from football practice, the varsity team rushed the field like fans entering a concert.
“We were blessed with another gorgeous day, and the whole vibe was so positive and exciting. The JV game was before ours, so we watched the first half and then came to the turf for our later game,” explained head coach, Traci Curtis. “We have done a great job attacking each game as they come, climbing the ladder one rung at a time. Assistant coach Lori Riley and I are very proud of our preparation at every step.”
“Our focus was intentional and purposeful – our game plan solid – play as ONE,” said Curtis, making reference to their team’s season theme, The Power of ONE.
The score tells a story as just numbers, but inside of that score is an even bigger story to be told. The history over the past five seasons of the score of Pennsbury’s first game against Neshaminy looks like this – 2019: 5-1 Neshaminy; 2020: 2-1 overtime Neshaminy; 2021: 7-0 Neshaminy; 2022: 5-1; Neshaminy: 2023: 6-0 Neshaminy.
“With the exception of 2020, which is an exception in itself, our history of first battles with the Skins have always been weak. There was nothing weak about today,” said Curtis.
Three minutes into the game, the red and blue earned the first of 15 penalty corners. Kasey Rieger put her team on the board with a straight shot just past the goalie’s right side. Neshaminy went up 1-0, and Curtis felt that familiar feeling that comes with an early goal like that.
This is the part of the story that the score does not reflect. This is where weakness never became part of the story. That 1-0 score remained the same going into halftime and all the way until there was one minute left in the third quarter when Neshaminy scored off of a nice corner play with a post tip. The 2-0 score would hold until the final buzzer, as the Falcons held the Skins scoreless in the fourth.
“The pride we felt in our players is unexplainable. They could have crumbled after that early goal and succumbed to the pressure of this high caliber game, but they didn’t crumble. At all. Instead, they united, dug deep, stuck to their plan, and fought. They fought hard with skill, speed, and heart. They held Neshaminy at 1-0 for 44 minutes,” said Curtis.
“There were so many victories for us inside of this game. Neshaminy only scored off penalty corners, not from regular field play. Our defense stopped 13 of the 15 corners the Skins earned. Our goalie saved 9 of 11 shots. Nesh was scoreless in the secondd and fourth quarters,” Curtis beamed. “One of the biggest pieces of this game was the sacrifice and hard work of sophomore, Abby Iacona, who did her job to hold Neshaminy’s leading scorer to only one goal off of a corner. Iacona singlehandedly broke up many opportunities their top player had and also worked to channel her into other defenders for great defensive plays.
“Iacona’s effort was a game changer. It certainly was a strategy we put into place and sacrificed Abby in other spaces on the field, but it was effective, and we knew she was the right one for the task.”
Curtis continued, “The Skins make us all work harder and strive to be at our best. They are a strong team with speed and great sticks. They are smart and skilled and never back down. Today we proved to ourselves that we have all those qualities as well.
“It was a really great field hockey game and although the offensive push may have been lopsided – not in our favor), the overall play of both teams was high level and made for an entertaining performance.
“Our defense was on fire and forced to play at a very quick pace for 60 minutes. Cailyn Reilly, Angelina Kenney, Avalee Shumski, and Payton Worth put together an awesome game with the help of keeper, Abby McCole. We struggled to create offensive opportunities today, earning only one penalty corner and taking four shots on goal, but that lapse is a result of sacrificing Iacona to do a specific job and is easy to adjust when the offense is all back together in one piece.”
Added Curtis, “We were very proud of the leadership of our captains, Ava Jordan and Angelina Kenney. They got everyone pumped and put their words into action on the field with incredible play. Tomorrow is a new day and time to take the next step and prepare to battle Council Rock North on Monday. The takeaways from today’s match up will be a perfect jumping point for us and only make us better. When you lose, you always learn.”

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, NORTH PENN 2
Those familiar with the chant “Every corner is a goal” know that nothing could be further from the truth.
Unless, of course, you’re talking about Central Bucks East in Thursday’s game at North Penn. The Patriots were awarded three corners. They scored on all three to earn the big road win.
To put that accomplishment in perspective – North Penn had 12 corners and scored on two, a stat that is much more typical than the Patriots’ 3-for-3.
“North Penn finished the second quarter with maybe four corners in a row with time expired,” East coach Emma Rosenthal said.
Laura Albert – who had both of North Penn’s goals – turned the fourth of the four into her first of two corners goals to trim the Patriots’ lead to 2-1.
Anna Daly – who inserts the ball on East’s corners – played a key role in all three of her team’s goals, scoring the first and assisting on the next two. Aly McIsaac and Sydney Lafferty – who celebrated her birthday Thursday – each added a goal.
For the Patriots, it was their sixth game of the young season, and less than two weeks in, they have played one third of their 18-game schedule.
“I don’t know if it was a great decision because I wish that we were playing the way we are playing now against some of the teams we already played, but we have a long season ahead of us,” Rosenthal said.
Scoring Summary:
1st quarter – No score
2nd quarter
CBE – Anna Daly from Katie Katie Szczypiorski 8:03 (1-0)
CBE – Aly McIsaac from Anna Daly 4:25 (2-0)
NP – Laura Albert from Cara Albano 0:00 (2-1)
3rd quarter
CBE – Sydney Lafferty from Anna Daly 3:59 (3-1)
NP – Laura Albert from Ashleigh Barwis) 0:55 (3-2)
4th quarter – No score
CB East coach Emma Rosenthal on the win: “We needed today badly. I didn’t want to say to the girls before the game, ‘Hey, we need to win badly’ just looking at rankings and the way we’ve been going. It was nice to get our first win this week against Pennridge, but we needed to get more W’s in the win column. We finally were getting some balls in the back of the cage.
“This win and having this momentum of having two wins this week coming off of starting the season 0-3 – it means the world.”
–Every corner was a goal: “We were 100 percent on corners. We practice corners every day, and I feel like every season is the same thing – we practice corners every day, and we hope for maybe a 25 (success) percentage rate. Today we stuck with the plan of every corner that we were going to do. I had three different girls take the shot off the corner, and all of them went in off the initial shot.
“If we could have a hundred percent corner rate, that would be amazing. It would have been game over. Would I have liked to have more corners today? Absolutely, but capitalizing on the opportunities we had really made the difference.”
–Halftime message: “They finished off the second quarter with four corners in a row with time expired, and when my girls came off the field, I said, ‘You know, at that point, you’re in there – four corners in a row. One’s bound to go in.’ Every goal they scored – we had an answer, and that’s what I’m really happy with.”
–Props: “Anna Daly plays her role in every single game. You put that girl out on the field, and no matter how she’s feeling, she’s going to give it her 100 percent. Not only is she an incredible skilled player and amazing leader, she just has a ton of heart. I can say that about all three of our captains – Anna Daly, Avery McCann and Maddie Mandia. How they play with heart just radiates throughout the team.
“Brynn Bernardo is a sophomore forward, and she had some really key breakaway moments today along with Aly McIsaac in the midfield. She was important to that as well.”
North Penn coach Shannon McCracken: “Credit to CB East for capitalizing on their corner opportunities – they had three penalty corners and came away with three goals. Unfortunately for NP, we outshot and out-cornered East but came up short on the scoreboard.”
Up next: Central Bucks East (2-3-1, 2-1 SOL) will host Souderton on Monday, and North Penn (2-2, 1-2) will be on the road at Pennridge (7 pm).

The Indians bounced back from Tuesday’s heartbreaking overtime loss to Central Bucks West with a win over the Titans.
Ava Jones broke a scoreless tie when she turned a passing sequence from Kami Ziegler to Julia Blair into a goal. The Indians took that lead into halftime and added a pair of goals – one each from Blair and Gianna Radcliffe – in the third quarter. South’s Emily Aldrich broke up the Indians’ shutout bid with a goal late in the third quarter.

By the numbers:
Shots: S 24, CBS 11; Corners S 5, CBS 1
Saves: Brianna Lucas (CBS) 21. Defensive save: Avery Tyler (CBS) 1. Souderton goalie 10.
Souderton Sue Casciato says: “CB South definitely controlled the tempo early in the game. Fortunately, we were able to turn the tide late in the second quarter. As always, CB South did a great job defending their circle. We had numerous chances in the second half and could only score twice, so I’m happy we were able to come away with a win.”
CB South coach Kelli Chioffe: “A win would have been like hitting the Jackpot tonight. Unfortunately, the cards were stacked against us. We had a handful of players with injuries and illnesses that could not play tonight, including our captains. This was a true total team effort. We are extremely proud of everyone on our team that stepped up to play a new or different position as well as in a new formation that they may have learned just yesterday in practice. Many of our reserve players either started and or played in a big chunk of the game. We were just so proud that we were able to get on the scoreboard today against a tough Souderton team and that it almost felt like a win for us. The girls never backed down.
“Today’s motto for CB South Field Hockey was: “Out Work. Out Hustle. Out Last.: We will continue to work for this and to keep our positive energy alive.”
–Props: “Kudos to Avery Tyler. Avery Tyler is a solid midfielder who was asked to play in the backfield tonight and had an impressive game. She had a defensive save as well as preventing Souderton from executing in the circle numerous times. She has such a calm presence on the field and kept playing her game of solid defense especially when we needed her most.
“The rest of our defense composed of Sophia Kraft, Kelly Hemsley and Hailey Finn also kept a strong Souderton offense out of our defensive circle as much as they could. Ella Marchesi, center midfielder, played consistently tonight, always hustling to the ball and never giving up. The outside mids, Carrie Williams and Peyton Flannery kept pushing the ball up the field for the forwards to get it into the circle. Our forwards – Addison Edwards, Kaeli VanDerSluis, Amy Hazell, Emily Aldrich and Riley Flynn – were able to get through their strong defense, getting 11 shots on their goalie. Our goalie, Brianna Lucas, was solid in the goal again tonight, turning away an impressive 21 shots on goal.”

Calista Boos, Heidi Schoenleber and Aida Ierubino were a triple threat for the Bucks in Thursday’s win. The trio combined for all six of their team’s goals – four on penalty corners.
Schoenleber – whose hat trick led the Bucks – scored the game’s first goal four minutes into the game on a penalty corner with an assist from Boos. After Ierubino scored with a Schoenleber assist, Ierubino scored on a corner with a Boos assist to spot the Bucks a 3-0 lead after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Schoenleber scored her second goal on a corner – this one with an Ierubino assist, and then it was Calista connecting on an unassisted goal to send the Bucks into halftime with a 5-0 lead.

CB West coach Lori Ierubino on the game: “It was a beautiful night for a field hockey game. Pennridge is a competitive team with a positive, never-give-up attitude. Our passing game and team structure are improving, and this was a good game to aid in this progression. I was very pleased with the effectiveness of our corners tonight. Some of our newer players got good minutes and experience, which will come in handy for the depth of our team.”
Pennridge coach Elena Romesburg on the game: “Today was a tough night on the scoreboard for us, but I was proud of how we were able to stay in the game and not give up. West is an incredibly talented and fast team, and it was good for our squad to get tested by that speed and intensity.”
–Props: “Our goalie, Charlotte Gozzard, played outstanding tonight, and freshmen Alex Jensen was a force on both ends of the field, working hard to redefend and distribute the ball. Seniors Sophia Cipressi, Audrey Frentzen and Leah Verespy made some really nice runs on the forward line. We just need to continue to work on capitalizing when we have the ball in the offensive quarter.”

With overtime appearing imminent and just five minutes remaining in regulation, Sophia Leonardi found a way to score in a crowd in front of goal, propelling the Lions to the hard-fought win.
Lower Moreland’s defense certainly made life difficult for the Lions, who had a decided advantage in corners and shots but could not find the goal until Leonardi’s game-winner.
Scoring Summary:

Coach Gwen Smith on the win: “This was huge. I’m proud that we kept battling, kept fighting, and I was very happy we could get one in. It was a good win.
“I want to give props to Lower Moreland for their defense. Their goalie did a really nice job – made a lot of good saves. They had really low disciplined defense. They played really well defensively.”
Coach Janet Lutter on the game: “It was a strong defensive showing by both teams. The lone goal did not come until the last four minutes of the game. Our defense is young and still learning but they are meshing together nicely.
“We have changed things up defensively this year with some new positions and younger players, so as the season progresses, we are getting better with the defensive stops. Now we need to get the ball in the next with some more offensive pressure. When we get our offense going, we will be a tough team to beat.”
–Strong in goal: “Goalie Jordyn MacPhee had 15 saves. This is her first year playing both goalie and field hockey – she has been my manager for the past two years. The time and dedication she has put into this new venture are starting to show.”
