PENNSBURY 6, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 0
(Article submitted by Pennsbury field hockey.)
It was Monday night lights at Falcon Field as the Pennsbury Falcons hosted Council Rock North to kick off the week. The PHS JV team set the tone with a 1-0 win in the opening game. With a shortened warmup to hit the 7pm varsity start, the orange and black were chomping at the bit to get out there and play. The first quarter was back and forth with the Falcons and CRN each earning attacking penalty corners and putting the ball on cage.
“We were really pleased with the way our girls were playing – patient, poised, and confident,” said coach Traci Curtis. “They were passing and connecting, but we knew we needed to step it up and continue to adjust.
“The North goalie was cutting off our angles and we had to start moving around her and be smarter in the circle.”
The score was 0-0 going into the second quarter, and Pennsbury knew it was going to be a battle to the very end. It is never a choice to get complacent against CRN – they have a way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it.
The second quarter opened up with Pennsbury continuing to get into the red zone and step up the pressure. Around the 10-minute mark, Rock’s goalie had an amazing save with her glove that resulted in a corner for PHS. After the insert, it was an all junior combo as Joley Hohman put the ball to stroke where Ava Pinto got her stick on it and deflected it around the goalie and
Nandi Ntshalintshali hit the back of the cage with force to put the Falcons up 1-0.
Despite the attacking power of Pennsbury, North kept it a 1-0 game going into halftime. CR North’s goalie was not making it easy to finish and the Falcons could feel CRN breathing down their necks.
“A 1-0 game going into the third quarter against North is unsettling in so many ways,” said Curtis. “They are tough and are really good at smelling a team’s letdown and capitalizing on it. We were making sure our girls understood the work that needed to be done to not slow down and allow them to get a goal and tie it up.”
But the third quarter was scoreless as well and now that lone goal hung on the scoreboard heading into the final fifteen minutes – the digital numbers seemed to be mocking PHS and illuminating the pressure of stepping up the performance another notch in this contest. Ava Pinto stared that pressure in the face and sent a ball into the circle three minutes into the fourth where Regan Rodriguez got a touch on it and Abby Iacona, ready and waiting, collected a rebound off of the goalie’s pads and shot it with force, upping the lead to two.
“I believe there was a collective exhale by us coaches because we felt like we had a second to breathe, but just for a second,” said Curtis.
And breathe they did because the Falcons continued to score almost every three minutes for the remainder of the game. The third goal started with a great backfield transfer and junior, Ryan Burdette, dodging through the midfield to hit Iacona up
front. Iacona dodged the goalie and reversed it past her to put the orange and black up 3-0 with ten minutes left to play. Pennsbury widened the gap to 4-0 with eight minutes left on a well-executed penalty corner play by Nandi Ntshalintshali, sophomore Leila Curtis, and junior Ava Pinto tallying the goal. Junior Cailyn Reilly set up a beautiful end-to-end goal for Pennsbury when she took the free hit from the backfield, connecting with Ryan Burdette, who fed the ball to Iacona in the middle. Iacona made the final dump pass to Harrison who was waiting patiently on the post to deflect it in – the perfect selfless, teamwork progression. The Falcons covered 100 yards in seconds and led 5-0 with a few minutes left in the game. Ryan Burdette added one more unassisted goal to finish off the scoring and end the game 6-0.
“We are beyond proud of our girls for coming out and executing like that, completely as a team, leaving no questions and taking care of business on a Monday night. Our goalie, Abby McCole earned the shutout with the help of an awesome defensive save by Joley Hohman right on the goal line. That level of effort is what every girl gave us tonight and for that we are extremely grateful and proud,” said Curtis with a smile.
“Yesterday we all met at the Princeton-UNC field hockey game at Princeton to watch an incredible high level college game and we believe a lot was learned and taken away from that afternoon,” explains Curtis. “Our girls observed, listened, and applied all of the things we talked about that we saw those collegiate players doing so well – not only was it a great day out as a field hockey family, it was beneficial to our game today without a doubt. The hard work is paying off, the attention to detail matters, and the connection we are building in our game is giving us confidence and momentum.”
Curtis adds, “We are taking one step at a time and learning and growing together along the way.”

(Council Rock South info will be added when its received.)
Rock South scored in the first four minutes, and after that the two teams remained scoreless until only eight seconds remained in the game.
“It was a bad way to start, but we really came together to hold down the CR South offense throughout the rest of the game,” Bensalem coach Gary Kubik said. “We’re playing better every day, and we’re really starting to believe that we can compete in this division. We are certainly heading in the right direction, and we’ll work at it again tomorrow in practice.”

Bensalem coach Gary Kubik:
–Props: “It was another outstanding effort from goalie Hailey Fricke and her defense in front of her. Defenders Abby Cheung, Makayla Duncan, Lucciana Krecko, Reagan Colgan, and Lexi Hartman all played well today.
The midfield was exceptional today with special days from Keana Rodriguez, Tierney Sayers, Paige Dando, and Anjali Guda. Kylie Blank continues to make plays at forward, forcing corners and putting constant pressure on the opponent’s defense. Chloe Masciantonio and Mollie Reilly had good games as well, putting pressure on the CRS defense.”
–Lennon excels: “I think the star that shined brightest today though was Veronica Lennon who continues to play the big minutes, is always where she is supposed to be, and moves the ball flawlessly up the field from her defensive midfield position. She scored what we believed to be the tying goal late in the second half on a beautiful reverse shot that was deemed to be dangerous. She gave us chance after chance during the final minutes when we were trying to tie that game up.

Souderton coach Sue Casciato:
–On the game: “Statistically, it was a very even game that could have gone either way. I felt like we got off to a good start early on, but we really struggled with our midfield play the second half. Fortunately, our backs played a strong game and were able to turn away several fast break opportunities that North Penn created. We gave up a number of defensive corners late in the game and we were able to do just enough to keep NP from converting.”
North Penn coach Shannon McCracken:
–On the game: “It was a tough battle with a lot of back and forth in the midfield with Souderton tonight. We had a slow start and Souderton scored within the first minute and half of the game which set us back on our heels. I felt we played a much better second half but unfortunately did not put up a goal. We led in offensive corners and had more time of possession in the second half but didn’t finish. Souderton is always a tough team who steps to the ball well. We need to capitalize on offensive corners and continue to support the ball better.”
–Props: “Our subs off the bench had a great night supporting the efforts of the team – midfielder Avery Hanrahan, forward Brooke Goewey, and back Lily Brown. Forward Cara Albano had a strong night going to goal with speed and redefending well. She put a lot of pressure on the Souderton backs which made a difference.”

Central Bucks South coach Kelli Chioffe:
–On the game: “Pennridge is a solid team. Their defense and goalkeeper made it difficult for us to score the entire game. We had numerous shots on goal but were denied. We were able to execute on some of our offensive corner plays and will continue to look to keep possession of the ball.
“We will work hard at practice and get ready for our next game against Souderton. All of the teams in our division our super competitive and it is anybody’s game on any given day.”
Pennridge coach Chris Chookagian:
–On the game: “Piece by piece, the puzzle is going together, and we are seeing the bigger picture on the field. Finishing up the first half of our league play tonight gives us the last of what we need to work through the upcoming mid-season stretch before resuming the second half of league play. It’s one of the toughest conferences around, we love the competition and look forward to seeing them all again in a few weeks.”

Aida Ierubino – committed to take her talents to the University of Maryland – scored a hat trick to lead the Bucks to a win that completed a perfect first go-round in division play.
Laney Hall scored the game’s first goal off the goalie’s pads six minutes into the first quarter. Ierubino scored the next three – the first two unassisted and the third during corner play with a Claire Demmer assist.
Heading into the second half of division play, the defending SOL Colonial Division champions are alone atop the division standings.
“It’s always a fun environment to play at CB East – their fans are spirited and enthusiastic and provide an extra energy to the contest,” West coach Lori Ierubino said. “CB East executed a nice press, and their goalie did a really nice job of making us earn our goals.”

Central Bucks West coach Lori Ierubino: “Tonight’s contest ends our first loop through the league. Our next game is a non-league game and will be against a very competitive and well coached Manheim Twp. team.”
–Props: “I thought Aida Ierubino did an excellent job of varying her speed to get open and score. Eve Damsker was an offensive threat out of the backfield, disrupting the press in place. Lucy Smith was a solid connection in the midfield; she was able to get the ball to the forwards from our backs and keep the ball in the attack after East’s defense would come up with a stop. Lastly, Quinn Carrol and Margot Trask were pivotal in stopping any attempt at an offensive run by East.”
Central Bucks East coach Emma Rosenthal:
–On the game: “We had a good defensive plan that I think worked well for the most part, but we just couldn’t capitalize when we got the ball on offense. Cam Puhalla played a fantastic game in goal. She was scored on three times by one of the best players in the country, and West is just overall a really solid team. I’m proud of the way that we played today and especially proud of our defense for hanging in tough and really putting up a fantastic fight.”

–On the game: “An incredible TEAM win. We are getting excited after a rough challenging start…we have won three in a row. We are healthy and working really hard on connecting and being able to reset.
–Props: “Shoutout to our center midfielder Cassidy Landis for controlling the middle and distributing the ball really well. She had 3 ASSISTS and set up Penny Longacre with a goal and Casey Rosenberger with two goals. I am really proud of Casey’s magnet stick and how she is able to finish. We scored with just 4 minutes into the game, but we have learned we need more than just one goal. I am proud of how we finished and appreciate our defenders Blair Mora, Penny Longacre, Shayna Williams, Emily Reese, and Cameron Landis. Darcy Baxter and Anna Haberle were in goal.”
Wissahickon coach Hannah Havrilla:
–On the game: “Our focus going into today’s game was to stay low on defense and take care of the ball in the circle. Unfortunately, that was not the outcome, as we struggled to play a complete game from start to finish.”
–Props: “A special shoutout goes to our goalkeeper, Ava, who kept us in the game with 14 saves on goal. Additional recognition goes to our two sweepers, Siena Le and Sylvia Lampron, who consistently stepped up to collect balls that got past our defense and midfield, carrying them out with confidence and placing passes into space.”

–On the game: “We pressed early but couldn’t find the net despite strong efforts from forwards Holly Shoup and Molly McGuckin.””
Upper Moreland coach Pam Remmey:
–On the game: “UM played hard until the last minute, losing a heartbreaking league game. The game ended with an offensive penalty corner which we deflected out of bounds. Captain Ella Gould and the forwards were putting pressure on Springfield in the end of the game but couldn’t get the goal to send it to OT.
“This game really showed that Upper Moreland is a team that is ready to compete at a higher level. Our future looks bright, considering we were missing some regulars and our underclassmen stepped up ready for varsity play.”
–Props: “Our goalie Tierney Hogan had another solid game with 10 saves and several strong clears to get the ball out of the circle.
“We were missing three starters due to sickness, and everyone who played really stepped up to play at the higher varsity level. Some of our key players MJ Reilly, Bridget Hess, Ella Gould and Melissa Torpey were asked to do a little bit more playing tough for 60 minutes, not getting a break. Taylor Pagano won our game ball playing aggressively at the right mid position.
Our defense held Springfield scoreless until nine minutes left in the game. Abby Kelly, Addi Gans and Charlotte Russo played well defensively under pressure.
“Three underclassmen that are some of our hardest workers and keep improving are Harper Richmond, Lyla Soleau and Hannah Gardner. These three 10th graders stepped into varsity roles today and showed they can hold their own at this level.”
