Four SOL field hockey teams were in action Saturday. PW was the lone winner. Check out the recaps.
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3, LOWER MERION 1
Julia Fiddler scored the only goal of the first half off a Sophie Kolkka assist. Kennedy Reardon connected on her first of two goals on a penalty stroke, and she scored again 10 minutes later on the rebound of a goalie save.
“We were able to pull out a win today over an aggressive and speedy Lower Merion team,” coach Charise Halteman said. “At halftime, we discussed adjusting to Lower Merion’s quick free hits and made adjustments in the second half.
“Although our team made some adjustments, I thought we struggled to maintain composure against Lower Merion’s pressure, but all in all, a good win for PW.”
Plymouth Whitemarsh (3-0, 2-0 SOL) will host Springfield Township on Monday.
Lower Merion 0-1 1
Plymouth Whitemarsh 1-2 3
METHACTON 3, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 2
The visiting Warriors opened up a 3-0 lead before the Patriots got on the scoreboard in Saturday’s non-league battle.
“Methacton played a strong game and was able to dominate for the majority of the game,” coach Michelle Finegan said. “Olivia Hoover and Emily Owens were very strong and continued to fight throughout the entire game.
“CB East was tired from the four games this week but dug deep and corralled at the end to come within one goal.”
The Warriors scored back-to-back goals in a one-minute span early in the first half with Owens scoring on a reverse stick goal and then Hoover converting a tip on the right post with a Frankie Lucchesi assist.
Katy Benton’s goal in the opening minute of the second half put the Warriors on top 3-0 before freshman Phia Mannino scored on the rebound off the goal two minutes later. It was Mannino’s second goal in as many games. With a minute remaining, Riley Donnelly banged home an unassisted goal for the 3-2 final.
Finegan credited Cailey Lever and Mackenzie Boyle for their strong play in the midfield.
Central Bucks East (4-1, 2-0 SOL) will host Pennridge on Monday.
Methacton 2-1 3
Central Bucks East 0-2 2
DOWNINGTOWN WEST 5, NORTH PENN 1
The visiting Knights trailed by just a 2-1 score at halftime but then were outscored 3-0 in the second half.
“Downingtown West’s persistent attack was too much for North Penn to handle after coming off a win against Central Bucks West yesterday,” coach Shannon McCracken said.
The Knights led 1-0 two minutes into the game when Bri O’Donnell turned a Mikayla Barrow pass into a goal. The Whippets knotted the score midway through the half on a goal by Tatum Johnson (Claudia Jaszcak assist) and then went on top 2-1 when Jesse Schlosser (Romea Riccardo assist) found the cage with 29 seconds remaining in the first half.
The second half belonged to the Whippets who received a pair of goals from Romea Riccardo, both with Ciana Riccardo assists. Sierra Angelini also found the cage, using a Celina Riccardo assist.
“We played an excellent first half, converting on an early penalty corner to take a lead and then coming up with many stops on the defensive end, led by goalie Anissa Gardizy and the scrappy defense of Rachel Fischer,” McCracken said. “However, Downingtown West took the momentum in the second half, and they were hard to stop.)
Downingtown West held a decided advantage in shots (30-3) and corners (15-3). The final score would have been a lot worse had it not been for the 20-save effort in goal of Anissa Gardizy.
North Penn (1-3, 1-1 SOL) will host William Tennent on Monday at 3:45 p.m.
North Penn 1-0 1
Downingtown West 2-3 5
