UPPER DUBLIN 60, CONESTOGA 26
Upper Dublin took care of business in a hurry in Wednesday’s season opener.
At the end of one quarter, the Cardinals led 20-4 and extended that lead to 37-9 by halftime on their way to the impressive win.
Eight players contributed scoring, led by Tamia Clark’s 17 points.
Equally impressive was UD’s defensive effort that included limiting Conestoga standout Ryann Jennings to just one field goal and six points.
Key players: Tamia Clark (17 points), Emilia Coleman (13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), Megan Ngo (9 points, 8 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks), Bridget DiMartile (8 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block), Ella Morris (6 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals)
Upper Dublin coach Morgan Funsten: “We have a ton of experience and a ton of talent, and it was very business-like today, and it didn’t look like the first game of the season – for us, at least. We were able to get out to a 17-0 lead.
“We had five different girls score in the first quarter, and we had six different girls score in the second quarter. The balance we have is really awesome. Bridget DiMartile came off the bench and scored five points in the first quarter. Megan Ngo did a great job getting the ball where it needed to be. She finished with eight assists.”
–Getting defensive: “Obviously, a big goal of ours was to stop Ryann Jennings, who’s going to Lehigh University. A combination of Emilia (Coleman) and Tamia (Clark) shared responsibility on her. Our goal was to hold her under 10, and we held her to six, so we were very excited about how we defended them as a team and really focusing on her.”
“It was a very efficient game. We turned them over 16 times in the first half, so that was how we got a lot of easy points off our pressure. It was just a great way to start the season.”
Up next: Upper Dublin will host Altoona in a non-league game Friday.
“We have a quick turnaround – that’s a team that made it to the second round of states last year,” Funsten said. “It’s one of only six home games for us.”

LOWER MORELAND 46, RENAISSANCE ACADEMY 33
The Lions trailed 10-8 after one quarter but found their stride in the second, outscoring their visitors 16-4 to go into halftime with a 24-14 advantage. Emma DiJoseph’s 11 first-half points led the Lions. Syd Santora scored all nine of her points in the half.
An 18-7 third quarter put the game completely out of reach.
Key players: Emma DiJoseph (16 points) and Molly Martin (15 points) led the Lions.
Lower Moreland coach Andy Krasna:
–On the game: “In our opening game of the season, our team delivered a strong performance. Our defense set the tone early, limiting their scoring opportunities (14 points in the first half), while our consistent ball movement on offense created high-quality looks throughout the night. The game was highlighted by our team’s energy, teamwork, and early-season focus, which gives us a solid base to build on moving forward.
“Our quick start allowed us to play 13 players, many who are ninth graders.”
–Props: “Junior Molly Martin is back from a season-ending injury (last winter), and it was a welcome back party for her. She defended and scored at a high level. Junior Emma DiJoseph had a huge impact running the floor, knocking down shots and playing with tons of energy. Junior Maddie Broderick was so steady rebounding, breaking pressure, sharing the basketball and defending their athletic post players, which really helped us. The Fey sisters (Olivia So. and Sophia Sr.) came in off the bench in the second quarter and helped us to get on track – we were trailing after eight minutes. Very impressive was junior Sydney Santora who was not feeling well, but, boy, you would have never believed it. She did it all tonight and her ability to see the floor, find her teammates, score when we needed it, and be a consistent playmaker was special and fun to watch.”
Up next: Lower Moreland will host Cheltenham in Tuesday’s SOL opener.

Springfield Twp coach Dave Giordano:

UPPER MORELAND 51, QUAKERTOWN 17
The Golden Bears opened up a 27-11 halftime lead on their way to the non-league win.
Key players: Sheila Mangin led all scorers with 14 points, while Mia Taliaferro (10 points) and Hailey Milks (11 points) also scored in double figures.
Upper Moreland coach Josh Adelman:
–On the game: “The Upper Moreland girls bounced back from a tough Tuesday night game in a win against Jenkintown and beat a pesky Quakertown team. Every game we play is a chance to see different players step up and find their roles on our team.
“We are relatively young, but we have players that work hard to improve as a team and individually. We had three players score in double figures and had eight players in all get into the scorebook. Defensively, we limited Quakertown to very few second chance points and due to this effort, carried a 27-11 lead into halftime.
–Props: “Props to Sheila Mangin for starting her first game as a varsity player and scoring 14 points. Also, a nice night for Hailey Milks and Mia Taliaferro both scoring, rebounding and playing stingy defense.”
Up next: Upper Moreland will host William Tennent in Tuesday’s SOL opener, and Quakertown will host Plymouth Whitemarsh in Tuesday’s opener.
