COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 45, NESHAMINY 44
Monica Stolic had a sinking feeling as she watched from the sidelines as the Redskins converged on Allison Taub in the closing seconds of overtime.
“I’m like, ‘We’re not even going to get a shot off’ because we had the same thing at the end of regulation,” the Golden Hawks’ coach said. “We got our shot blocked.
“Allison was triple teamed at the elbow, she kicked the ball to Shannon, and Shannon hit the three at the buzzer.”
Taub’s buzzer beater capped a marvelous performance that saw the senior guard bury six three-pointers – three in overtime – en route to a game-high 28 points.
It was Taub’s heroics that allowed the Golden Hawks to rally from a five-point deficit in OT, and they still trailed by two when Stolic called a timeout with 15 seconds remaining, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Cara Barlow also finished in double figures for the Hawks with 10 points while Allison Taub – the focal point of the Redskins’ defense – had just two points but contributed eight rebounds and five assists.
“She was double teamed, and she would kick it out to the shooters,” Stolic said.
The game started out on a promising note for the Redskins, who led 14-9 after one quarter, but they scored just two points in the second quarter, allowing the Golden Hawks to go into halftime with an 18-16 lead. Taub accounted for seven of her team’s nine points in the second quarter.
“We were taking turns with the lead,” Stolic said. “There were lapses on both sides.
“We changed our defenses, but they basically stayed in a two-three zone the whole game. It was a slow-paced game – there wasn’t much transition.”
The Hawks – sparked by seven points from Taub – outscored their visitor 10-5 in the third quarter to go on top 28-21, but the ‘Skins used a 12-5 fourth quarter to knot the score. The Hawks edged the Redskins 12-11 in the extra period to earn the conference season sweep of the Redskins.
“We beat them pretty big the first time (47-29), but I told them it wasn’t going to be the same,” Stolic said. “It’s a rivalry.
“We’ve had so many games where we were close, but things didn’t go our way, so it was nice. Hopefully, this will give us a little momentum heading into districts.”
Neshaminy (14-7) and Rock South (12-10) closed out conference play tied for third place in the standings with identical 9-5 records.
