North Penn 10, Plymouth Whitemarsh 9
After a rough start to the season, North Penn has turned things around and reeled off four straight victories, including a narrow win over host Plymouth Whitemarsh in a non-league game Friday.“We needed this, we needed to finish a week with all wins,” North Penn coach Heather Mellow said. “I think what we were missing at the beginning of the season was realizing that we didn’t need a standout – we just needed to work together as a group, and that’s what we’re finally figuring out. Every game we have multiple scorers – it’s five people putting in two goals. There’s no one go-to person anymore. It’s a well-balanced team.”
The Maidens, who started the season with four straight losses, fell behind 4-1 in the early going to the Colonials before rallying.
“I had to call a timeout – I had to stop the bleeding,” Mellow said. “We made some adjustments on the draw because we weren’t winning the draw. The midfield just got scrappier and smarter and started getting the draws at that point. Casey Cavanaugh, Grace Sacchetti and Emily Varilla did a nice job today. The three of them just worked hard the entire game."
Out of the timeout, North Penn scored five-straight goals to take the lead before the Colonials netted two of their own to tie things at 6-6 headed to halftime.
In a back and forth second half it was Cavanaugh scoring what would be the game-winner with four minutes to play.
“We got the last couple of draws,” Mellow said. “It was tied, we went down and scored and then we got the draw again and basically stalled the ball for the last four minutes of the game. I have some girls that can run, and PW was definitely tired at that point.
“It was an exciting game but a stressful one – they always are when it’s back and forth like that.”
Emily Varilla had two goals, two assists and three draw controls while Cavanaugh had two goals and four draw controls. Lily Szilagyi contributed a pair of goals and Sacchetti had a goal, three assists and four draw controls. Alli Lindsay, Kristin Varilla and Emmy D’Ambrosio each had one goal. Goalie Ashley Lambert made five saves.
“My defense does a great job – they work hard together,” Mellow said. “This is same unit for the last two three years. The offense is all new – except for Kristin Varilla. It’s taken us the aches and pains of getting through the first four games to figure out what we needed to do, but we’re getting there."
Lexi Petrakis had a hat trick for the Colonials while Max Lexczynski (two assists) and Raquel Baskin each had two goals. Lucy Sullivan (one assist) and Callie Kolkka each added a goal.
North Penn (4-4, 2-0 SOL) will host Central Bucks East on Monday, and Plymouth Whitemarsh (2-5, 0-1) will host Wissahickon on Monday.

Souderton 19, Lansdale Catholic 2
Souderton had little trouble in posting a big win over visiting Lansdale Catholic in non-league action Friday.
The Indians, who led 13-1 at halftime, received big games from Riley McGowan, who had a game-high six goals (to go along with two assists), Randi Hess (three goals, one assist) and Kylie Norbeck (three goals).
Clark Trowbridge added a pair of goals in the win while Sydney Rohrbach, Sophia Sclafani, Alison Mallon, Lauren Kenah (two assists) and Caroline Kelly each had one goal. Goalie Lauren Scott made six saves.
Souderton (4-5, 1-2 SOL) will host Hatboro-Horsham on Monday at 5 p.m.

Talk about your turnarounds.
After losing big to Central Bucks West a year ago, Hatboro-Horsham came up with a huge non-league win over the visiting Bucks on Friday.
In 2018, Central Bucks West defeated the Hatters 17-1, but that wouldn’t be the case Friday.
“We’re young, and I think they’re starting to realize what they need to do and how to do it,” Hatboro-Horsham coach Marie Schmucker said.“They’re just starting to come together. They’re extremely coachable, they listen. We did have 16 turnovers. We threw the ball away on offense when we should have worked it. I don’t care if it takes you five minutes to score a goal – you work it for one good shot. There’s no shot clock, and I think they think there’s a shot clock.
"We need to have fewer turnovers. You can’t win tight games when you have 15 or 16 turnovers. That’s what allowed them to score. I keep telling them – this isn’t rocket science. If the other team doesn’t have the ball, they can’t go down and score, so we have to make better choices with our passing, better choices with our shot selection. It’s just youth, inexperience and they’re still trying to gel together."
Schmucker praised the play of her midfielders.
“Cam Ryan, Gabby Liott and Sophia Liott did a fabulous job,” the Hatters’ coach said. “They really, really work up and down the field. Cam Hughes worked well on offense, getting the offense together and showing some leadership. Defensively, we played well as a team.”
Ryan (three goals, two assists), Gabby Liott (two goals, one assist) and Aubrey Leibfried (two goals) paced the offense while Abby Roesing, Sophia Liott and Hughes each had one goal.
The loss was a tough one for the Bucks as it marked the third time this season they’ve lost by just one goal.
“The halftime score we were down 4-7 and we got ourselves together and focused and scored five goals, it just wasn't enough,” West coach Rebecca Cartee Haring said. “We beat ourselves today. Even though we caused nine turnovers, we had unforced turnovers that cost us possessions. We have a young attack and I am proud of what they have been able to accomplish. We just need to work on our decision making and take better care of the ball. If we do that and truly believe in ourselves, we will be a force.”
West senior Casey Reichwein (four goals and an assist) reached an impressive milestone as she reached 400 career draw controls (11 in this one).
“She has been such a versatile player over the years,” Cartee Haring said. “Besides consistently dominating the draw, she has been such a team player. Last year, she stepped up and took a defensive role and this year I knew we needed her leadership and skills on the attack and so I moved her into a position she hasn't played in a year.
“She does what she is asked all in stride and without question. She doesn't make excuses and she is the first to step up and be accountable when needed. She is a great team player and leader for the girls on the team. She is the kind of player that coaches hope to have the opportunity to coach because while she is open and willing to take coaching she helps make us better coaches.”
Emma Haring and Maddy McGarry each had a goal and an assist for the Bucks while Tori Albrecht, Julia Carey and Shannen Roy each had a goal.
Central Bucks West (4-3, 2-0 SOL) will host Pennsbury on Monday, and Hatboro-Horsham (4-4, 1-2) will travel to Souderton Monday.

Upper Dublin 13, Pennridge 6
The Flying Cardinals rebounded from a disappointing loss to Upper Moreland to defeat the visiting Rams in a non-league contest Friday. They took a tenuous 5-4 lead into halftime and then outscored their visitors 8-2 in the second half to seize control of the game.
Becky Browndorf and Mack Moore turned in glittering offensive performances as both scored five goals and assisted on two others to lead the Cardinals. Julia Reardon added two goals, and Jackie Rama had one goal and one assist. Michelle Wright had an assist.
Riley Brady recorded four saves in goal in the win.
Upper Dublin (5-4, 2-1 SOL) will host Cheltenham on Monday, and Pennridge (1-7, 0-2) will host Council Rock North on Monday.

Wissahickon 9, Council Rock South 2
The Trojans won their seventh straight game without a loss. Kelly Dickson led the Trojans with three goals and two assists. San Intrieri added two goals and two assists. Sophia Chiodo Ortiz added two goals and one assist, and Abby Degroat and Emma Baker each added one goal.
The Trojans led 3-2 at halftime, and their defense led by goalie Madeleine Murphy and defenders Lauren Donofrio, Naomi Bram, Lexi Hobson and Haley Reed put the clamps on the Golden Hawks, shutting them out in the second half.
Wissahickon (7-0, 2-0 SOL) will travel to Plymouth Whitemarsh on Monday, and Council Rock South (3-6, 1-2) will be on the road at Council Rock North on Monday.

The Indians celebrated Senior Night by earning a non-league win over the visiting Owls, who are playing an independent schedule in their first year of varsity competition.
Before the game was 10 minutes old, the Indians led 3-0, thanks to goals by senior Emily Booth, junior Chloe Ondria and senior Lucy Breithaupt. Breithaupt’s goal marked the beginning of a personal 5-0 tear over the next seven minutes that put the Indians on top 7-0. The Indians reeled off four more goals to up their advantage to 11-0 before the Owls got on the scoreboard to make it an 11-1 game at the intermission. Senior Maggie Huebeck had a pair of goals in the Indians’ late run while Booth scored her second goal of the half and senior Erin Reavy also had a goal.
The Indians outscored the Owls 4-1 in the second half, thanks to goals by seniors Lily Ries, Olivia Huddy and Paige Gregg as well as sophomore Emma Sadovy.
Breithaupt, who had a hand in eight goals, also dished off three assists. Huebeck and Booth both had a pair of helpers. Contributing one assist each were Ondria, Gregg, Huddy, Ries and Reavy.
Council Rock North (1-6, 0-2 SOL) will host Council Rock South on Monday.

Central Bucks South 17, Lower Moreland 3
Central Bucks South cruised to a big victory over host Lower Moreland in a non-league game Friday.
The Titans, who led 10-0 at halftime, saw 11 players have at least one goal led by senior Francine Richick, who had four goals and two assists. Senior Anna Green had a hat trick and two assists while senior Kelsey McDonald had a goal and an assist. Junior Maddie Cooper also netted a goal in the win.
Sophomores Janessa Watson (two assists) and Bridget Curtis (one assist) each had a goal.
Freshman Tegan Mullen had two goals and an assist while fellow-freshmen Kate Victor (two assists), Madeline Flynn, Julia Cooper and Emalee Day had a goal apiece. Senior Goalie Katelyn Wendling made 10 saves.
Central Bucks South (5-3, 1-1 SOL) will travel to Archbishop Wood for a non-league game Monday.

The Falcons rolled to their seventh win without a loss, opening up a 10-5 halftime lead and never looking back.
Maddy Spratt turned in another stellar outing for the Falcons. She not only had a hand in nine goals, scoring five and assisting on four, she also had 11 draw controls. Brooke Weaver added five goals and an assist while Maggie Golder had four goals and two assists. Lexie Snyder contributed two goals and an assist, and contributing one goal each were Emelie Curtis, Sarah Walcott and Darrien Furiness.
Falcon goalie Celia Dolan turned away 11 shots.
Maddie Yoder’s six-goal effort led the Spartans. She also had two draw controls and three ground balls. Emily Walsh added two goals, one assist, two draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Adding one goal each were Emily Smith (four draw controls, one ground ball, two caused turnovers), Lauren Corrado (one assist, four ground balls) and Ella Marino. Molly McGoldrick had one ground ball and two caused turnovers. Gracie Woron scooped up five ground balls to lead the Spartans. Contributing one ground ball each were Charlotte Henry, Sophia Perry and Ellie Lynch.
Annie Ryan was credited with seven saves in goal for the Spartans.
Pennsbury (7-0, 2-0 SOL) will travel to New Hope-Solebury Saturday for a non-league game, and Springfield Township (4-3, 1-2) will host Abington on Monday.
