SOL National Conference
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 10, NESHAMINY 7
Claudia Steinmetz scored five goals to lead the Golden Hawks to the SOL National win on Monday. Caitlyn Thornton added three goals for the winners, Mikayla VanAken and Lauren Mitchell one each.
“We didn’t play our best,” said South coach Madison Hurwitz. “Too many turnovers transitioning from defense to attack but a win is a win.”
Katie Denis matched Steinmetz with a five-goal effort of her own for the Redskins. Sophia Stewart and Caroline Angerer added one goal each while Mackenzie Foster added an assist.
Stephanie Bennett had nine saves in goal for the Redskins.
Although a senior trip will be taking away some of her players, Hurwitz is looking forward to the upcoming week.
“(We have) a full week of practice to improve,” she said.
Council Rock South (3-1, 1-0) will host Jenkintown on Monday in a non-league game, and Wissahickon (1-4) will travel to Cheltenham on Wednesday.
Non-league
UPPER DUBLIN 10, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 9
Lindsay Schreiber scored on an eight-meter shot with 1:37 remaining in regulation to give the Flying Cardinals the dramatic win Monday night at War Memorial Field. Close games are becoming the norm for the Cardinals – four of their six games this season have been decided by one goal.
“It was a complete team effort from top to bottom tonight – it was amazing,” UD coach Dee Cross said.
The final 97 seconds of the contest were not without drama as UD goal Sarah Herchenroder – who had six saves – preserved the one-goal lead with a toe save in the final minute of play.
“Sarah Herchenroder stopped some point blank shots on goal and had that toe save at the end of the game,” Cross said. “We just never panicked. It was like we had nothing to lose.”
Making the win even more remarkable was the fact that the Cardinals found themselves down 4-0 early on in Monday’s contest but pulled to within one by halftime, 6-5.
“Once the defense realized if they kept working together to step in and cut off the passing lane and cut off the path to goal, we started getting some turnovers, and they started dropping the ball a little,” Cross said. “We played a straight-up man-to-man, and once they figured out they had to work together, they started to gain some confidence, and the next thing you know we’re getting turnovers.”
Schreiber led the Cardinals with four goals, an assist, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Maddie Templeton added three goals, an assist, three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
“Maddie Templeton played the game of her life,” Cross said. “She played middie tonight for us – usually I use her on defense. Between her and Lindsey Schreiber, they were absolutely spent by the end of the game because they were all over and really helped to control everything.
“They scored seven of our 10 goals. The seniors stepped up.”
The Cardinals start three brand new defensive players this season – a freshman, sophomore and junior, and on the offensive end, the Cardinals play three freshmen and a sophomore.
“We have a lot of brand new players, but in the midfield is where our seniors are really starting to take a leadership role, and that’s what absolutely helped us tonight,” Cross said.
Also for the Flying Cardinals, Mack Moore added a goal and two assists, Julia Reardon, a goal and an assist, and Aly Breslin, a single goal.
The Cardinals, who have been without Jackie Rama all season so far, were also minus midfielder Becky Browndorf on Monday due to an injury.
“Jen McCarry, a freshman, usually plays low attack, and I asked her to play midfield, and she just did it,” Cross said. “They do what we ask them to do, no hesitation, and tonight they just got it done in every single position.
“CB West was fast, they came at us hard, they have a great draw specialist that helped them get possession. We fought for every single thing, and they just never gave up. They really just worked together. If we turned the ball over, we got it back, and we haven’t been doing that. Once they were able to get a couple of turnovers back, that absolutely helped our momentum.”
Dani Dundas, Finley Ueland, and Maddie Maio scored three goals each for the Bucks. Chloe Miller Russo Emma Haring, Maio, and Dundas all had assists.
“I have to give UD credit – even with two of their better players out, they came to win tonight and never stopped hustling,” West coach Tara Schmucker said. “We struggled with poor decisions and turnovers.
“Defensively, we didn’t adjust and just didn’t work as a unit tonight. We had the opportunities in the end but just didn’t execute and finish. It’s a good wake-up call for us, and hopefully, we come back stronger.”
Upper Dublin (5-1) will host Hatboro-Horsham on Wednesday, and Central Bucks West (5-1) will travel to Upper Moreland on Thursday.

PENNSBURY 12, HATBORO-HORSHAM 8
Natalie Smith and Lily Nolan were hot on a frozen night, and the two combined to bring Pennsbury to within one of its win total from all of last season.
Smith made 16 saves and Nolan scored seven goals to lead Pennsbury to a 12-7 win over Hatboro-Horsham Monday night. The victory improved the Falcons to 3-0 this year after a 4-13 season a year ago, and all three wins have come against teams who beat Pennsbury a year ago.
Hatboro-Horsham scored first and kept Pennsbury off the board until Emelie Curtis scored on a free position shot 13:24 into the game. Nolan then scored her first less than a minute later, and the Hatters would never tie the score again.
It was 4-2 Pennsbury at the break, with three by Nolan, and she scored the first two Pennsbury goals of the second half to keep the Hatters away.
The closest H-H would come would be one after two goals eight seconds apart, making it an 8-7 game with 6:06 to play. It stayed that way until Brooke Weaver scored with 2:22 to go, and Pennsbury then pulled away with three more after that.
Curtis finished with two goals and two assists, her total in each of the first three games. Sarah Mac Davis scored twice for Pennsbury as well.
Hatboro-Horsham outshot Pennsbury 29-24, but sophomore goalie Smith came up big time and again.
Nolan ran her career total to 141 goals.
Pennsbury will travel to Central Bucks East, and Hatboro-Horsham (0-4) will be on the road at Upper Dublin.
ABINGTON 12, GREAT VALLEY 8
Natalie McNamara turned in a stellar offensive outing, scoring seven goals to lead the Ghosts the non-league win.

Also for the Ghosts, Taheera Rodgers and Lauren Van Buren added two goals each. Jamira Mashore and Kaley Ehnow both had two assists. Rodgers, Abby Thomas and Shea Gormley chipped in one assist each.
“We finally got into our groove today,” Klepper said. “Natalie McNamara was bold on attack. More of our attackers are taking opportunities to drive to the cage.”
The Ghosts helped their own cause by winning 13 draw controls.
Ellie Hughes made 10 saves in goal
“Ellie had some key saves,” Klepper said. “Our defense played patient, (forcing) some key turnovers at the end of the game when we needed possession. The girls worked hard all the way through to the final whistle.”

The visiting Colonials raced out of the starting gate to a commanding 11-1 halftime lead on their way to the no-doubt-about-it win.
