NORTH PENN 13, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 6
Monday’s “Lax 4 Leukemia” contest took on special meaning to the Knights, who played in honor of former North Penn player Alyssa Oxenford, who lost her battle with leukemia in August of 2015.
The game didn’t start on a promising note for the Knights as the visiting Patriots raced out of the gate to a 4-0 lead. The Knights rallied to knot the score 6-6 at halftime and did not allow a goal in the second half of a contest that was halted with 4:30 remaining in regulation due to heavy rain.
“CB East started the game off strong and quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead,” NP coach Heather Mellow said. “Our offense got a spark with a goal from defender Caroline Hoy to get us started.
“Our defense played a strong second half, and Kiera (Holt) made some great saves that kept East scoreless. Our offense played a much more composed second half with so many different players finding the net. It was a hard fought game by both sides.”
Holt was credited with nine saves in the win.
Mellow credited the play of Laynie Doran, Ella Burget, Hannah Mallitz, Caroline Hoy and Grace Macnamara for anchoring the Knights’ defensive effort.
On attack, Lily Szilagyi’s four-goal effort led the Knights while Alli Lindsay and Emily Varilla both added a pair of goals. Lindsay also had four draw controls while Varilla had three. PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 13, ABINGTON 12 (OT)
Freshman Meghan Wendler turned a pass from teammate Brianna Austin into the golden goal, propelling the Colonials to the heartstopping win in Monday’s overtime thriller.
“We got the draw in overtime,” PW coach Ellen Reilly said of the game-winning sequence. “Max (Leszczynski) won a good majority of the draws for us today. She took it down, and we had a really good shot off an 8-meter and the goalie made a nice save.
“Abington started transitioning the ball, and my offense re-defended, caught the girl on the sidelines and gave us possession back. We went down and Megan Whendler and Brianna Austin did a two-man game. Megan went around the goal cage and won the game for us with 45 seconds remaining in overtime after tying the game for us at the end of regulation.”
The Ghosts, who led 6-4 at halftime after trailing 4-2 early, led by three late in the second half, but the Colonials reeled of three straight goals to even the score when Wendler scored with 23 seconds remaining in regulation.
“My kids just slowly worked hard at winning the draw and keeping possession, and we’ve been trying to do that,” Reilly said. “They get a little too excited and force things, and finally, they got the win because the past couple of games we’d do some really nice things and we’d either throw it away or give the lead up. You can see they get frustrated with themselves, and they can’t push it over the top, but today they did. One goal at a time they caught up.”
Leszczynski led the Colonials with four goals, one assist and eight draw controls. Austin also had four goals while Wendler had a hat trick. Fiona Gooneratne had one goal and one assist, and Elle Clark had one goal, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
“It was back and forth and back and forth,” Reilly said. “They’re a good team. They have some good players, and they worked hard just like we did to get the draw, get possession.
“We each made our own individual turnovers, but each team fought back. It was a total team effort. My offense did a really good job re-defending. They work hard trying to stop the other team’s transition. On defense, we’re really trying to work to play as a unit, to slide and help each other out.”
Reilly credited her goalie, Clancey Lynch, for making a big save late in the game, giving the Colonials possession and the opportunity to go down and knot the score.
“That was key to in our win,” Reilly said.
Abington coach Amalie Kreitman had no complaints about her team’s effort.
“It was another great game,” she said. “We played very well today, but they had us on free positions.
“Our defense played very well – Lilly Alessandro, Audrey Silverman and Zoe Freedman were solid down there.”
Maddie Hinkle’s five goals and one assist led the Ghosts. Lesha Karaba added four goals while Shea Gormley, Abby Johnson and Mei Mei Cheng each had one goal. Cheng also had two assists and Gormley had one helper.
“Mei Mei was great in transition, and she was leading in draw controls,” Kreitman said.
The efforts of Cheng were not lost on Reilly.
“That little girl hustles all over the place, and she does nice things for their team,” the PW coach said. “She works hard. She stands out just because of all the little things she does.
“It could have been either team winning or losing. I’m just glad my kids won one of these for themselves because they deserved it.”
