Non-league
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 2, SPRINGFIELD TWP 0
The Colonials celebrated Senior Night with a shutout win over the Spartans in a non-league contest Monday.
Keira Whelan (Maddi Lazaroff assist) scored late in the first half – her goal that turned out to be the game-winner. Liv Budin added an insurance goal in the second half, scoring on the rebound of a shot off the crossbar.
“It was a great celebration tonight, pre and postgame, but it’s a quick turnaround tomorrow night at Wissahickon,” PW coach TJ DeLucia said. “We know that we will be in for a battle, so we’ll have to bring our best effort.”
Scoring Summary
First half
PW – Keira Whelan (Maddi Lazaroff assist)
Second half
PW – Liv Budin
Plymouth Whitemarsh coach TJ DeLucia on the game: “Tonight, we celebrated Senior Night. We have five seniors: Gianna Clark, Audrey Conroy, Quinn Daley, Katie Lukens, and Liv Reilly. It was a wonderful pregame celebration, and we had a large student body turnout which is a testament to these five seniors.
“It was a really physical game, and our players responded to Springfield’s physicality. We had a few chances in the box in the first half but couldn’t put any away.”
–The goals: Finally, with five minutes remaining in the (first) half, sophomore midfielder Maddi Lazaroff took a free kick and played it hard at the keeper who bobbled it. Keira Whelan followed the ball all the way in and poked it in the net for her fourth goal of the season and Lazaroff’s team-leading fifth assist. It was a well-deserved goal as Keira was outstanding all game controlling play in the middle of the park. She played the full 80 in midfield, and her work rate tonight was on another level.
“At halftime, we spoke about finishing some of these chances that we are creating. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Mia Baron puts a beautiful corner kick into the box that Keira Whelan knocks off the crossbar. Junior midfielder Liv Budin follows and puts in the rebound for her first goal of the season. Budin does a lot of the dirty work for this team that doesn’t get noticed so I was happy to see her put one in. We try to be extremely dangerous on set pieces, and the balls that are being played in by Maddi Lazaroff and Mia Baron are a huge part of that equation.”
–Props: “Olivia Bragg, in net, earned her sixth clean sheet of the season. Our backline of senior Katie Lukens, juniors Maddie McLaughlin and Kaiane Jayo, and freshman Harper Reilly were tremendous tonight – playing all 80 minutes. Their communication has improved so much over the past 14 games. They’re really growing together as a unit, together with Bragg.”

Scoring Summary
First half – No score
Second half
Brogan Neely (UM) from Leah King 47th minute
Upper Moreland coach Lisa Benvenuto on the game: “We set out today to set the tone and come out strong. We have been working on our touches, our speed of play, our transition game, and today it really showed.
“Our possession game was strong, we were able to move the ball through the midfield and found our forward line; we played the simple ball today and because of that we were able to generate a significant amount of opportunities with only one making it in the goal. We continued to control the ball and moved it well through the system.”
–The game-winner: “Lizzie Walker has been such a threat to opposing teams with her set pieces. She put a tremendous corner across the box which found its way to Leah King, who put the ball back into the box. Brogan Neely found herself on the other end of the pass and buried the shot.”
–Props: “Our back line played strong, and Gracie Costello recorded her sixth shutout. Maggie Brophy and Stephanie Jones held the middle with support from Leah King, Keiley Hawk and Madeline Cox. Ava Warga had a nose for the goal, hitting just about every post. We had strong play off the bench and were able to continue to high pressure Upper Merion.”
Up next: Upper Moreland (7-7, 2-4 SOL) will host New Hope-Solebury on Tuesday.
