The Redskins celebrated the team’s seniors with a shutout win over the visiting Firebirds.
The two teams battled to a scoreless halftime tie that was broken when Matt Diamond scored in the 55th minute. Rezi Tebidze added an insurance goal.
Scoring Summary
First half – No score
Second half
Matt Diamond (N) 55th minute
Rezi Tebidze (N) from AJ Kollie 74th minute
Neshaminy coach Tom Foley on the game: “Tonight was our Senior Night, so we started our whole group of seniors. We did pretty well. We created some opportunities. I thought Ghost was susceptible for us getting the ball wide. We had a couple of real nice combinations getting ball wide. We just couldn’t seem to punch one in. Dylan Reheil got stoned in the first half by their keeper, who made a really nice save.
“The second half was much of the same. We controlled a lot of the play. Finally, we broke through. All in all, it was a real good win for us. The seniors did a great job tonight. Most of them played anywhere from 22-45 minutes or more, so they did a really nice job tonight.
“We play at Council Rock South tomorrow in a back-to-back, so we get right back into the fire again, but this was a good night for everyone. It was a very good win.”
–The goals: “A ball came across. It was kind of a melee. There were a couple of saves by the keeper, a couple foots in front of the ball, and finally, Matt Diamond came in and buried it.
“We got a little more excited to play and got a few more opportunities. Their keeper made a nice save. At one point, we had a corner, and Brian Birmingham hit an unbelievable bicycle shot, and their goalkeeper made a great save and parried it over the bar. It would have been the goal of the year, by far, if he would have
hammered that home.
“Rezi (Tebidze) was able to ice it away when AJ (Kollie) broke in from the right side and slotted a ball through to Rezi, and Rezi calmly deaked around the goalie and tucked it into the open net. It was a real polished finish.”
–Props: “I thought Brian Birmingham, our center back, was outstanding and won a lot of headers. They have a really big center back, who came up for corners. He outworked him and got on the end of all of them, and their guy really didn’t get a clean look at any of the balls tonight across the box. He was outstanding. He cleaned up just about everything coming down the middle.
“Mark Andreyeu was just very, very good in the back as well.”
Up next: Neshaminy (10-2-2, 5-1-0 SOL) will travel to Council Rock South Tuesday (7 pm).
