SOL Liberty
Plymouth Whitemarsh 3, Abington 1
For the first time since their season opener, the Colonials found themselves behind on the scoreboard.
It’s a credit to PW’s defensive unit, which had posted four straight shutouts but if the Colonials were going to run their win streak to five, it would require a rally. It didn’t take long, as PW scored within a minute to tie the game, then senior Maddie McGuckien scored for a fourth straight fixture to put her team in front midway through the second half.
The Colonials’ defensive group was still on point, covering a lot of ground and sticking to their assignments against an Abington team that presented some new challenges.
PW holds first place in the SOL Liberty with one fixture left in the first half of division play, a showdown with second place Upper Dublin on Thursday afternoon.
Scoring Summary
1st half
A – Addison Doyle
PW – Liv Patete (Harper Reilly) 32nd
2nd half
PW – Maddie McGuckien (Molly McEvoy) 58th
PW – Abington own goal
PW coach TJ DeLucia on the win: “Really big win for PW girls’ soccer today. We know how good Abington is, but we were confident going in. We watched film and felt good about our chances if everyone performed up to their capabilities. What we weren’t ready for to start the game was how big and physical Abington is this year. It took us a bit to get used to that. But, once we started to match their physicality, we settled into the game.”
–Responding after falling behind: “I spoke to the team before Hatboro about how we would react if they scored first. Thankfully, they didn’t but one game later, we were in that position. This year’s group rose to the occasion. No one put their head down, no one pouted, we didn’t turn on each other. We took the tap and a minute and 15 seconds later, we scored the equalizer. Marleigh Burton wins us a throw deep in Abington territory. After the throw, sophomore Harper Reilly puts a beautiful cross into the back post that junior Liv Patete heads off the post. Liv tracks down her own rebound and puts it away for her second goal of the season. Patete and senior Liv Budin came off the bench and really impacted the game in midfield in the first half. Their physical presence really helped with us settling into the game.”
–Taking the lead: Midway through the second half, Marleigh Burton does the work again to get us a goal. She makes a great run down the right, plays a fantastic cross into Liv Patete at the back post and Patete wins us a corner. Maddi Lazaroff finds Molly McEvoy’s head on the corner. The Abington clearance finds Maddie McGuckien who strikes the ball first-time and finds the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Maddie has scored in four straight games, all in our league. Maddie was our vocal leader today on the field. She was in total command for 80 minutes, continuing to establish herself as one of the top players in the league.”
–Adding insurance: “With 11 minutes remaining in the game, Maddi Lazaroff wins a free kick out wide. She takes the free kick, plays a great ball in. McGuckien challenges the Abington defender, gets a poke towards goal. Abington tries to clear off the goal line and it ends up being an own goal. Difficult ball to deal with so credit to Maddi Lazaroff, who finished the game strong today.”
–Standouts: “I want to highlight the play of senior centerback Kaiane Jayo today. Kaiane had a very difficult job, dealing with Abington’s Alexis Whaley. Whaley is a terrific player who we are very well aware of. Kaiane was smart, strong, and disciplined. Freshman JJ Lafferty and sophomore Harper Reilly were very good, as well, in defense. In addition to Kaiane, senior Keira Whelan really put in a shift. Her work rate sideline to sideline, endline to endline, was just terrific today. We asked her to hold the ball up constantly against a physical Abington backline. We asked her to drop on all defensive free kicks and corners to mark one of Abington’s best players. Keira didn’t get on to the scoresheet today, but her coaches recognize the impact that she had on the game.”

The Cardinals have been able to score goals this season, UD posting 15 in six matches heading into Tuesday’s clash under the lights at Hatboro-Horsham.
UD kept up the offense, but the defense also came to play on Tuesday, the unit posting its first shutout of the season to keep the Cardinals a game back of Plymouth Whitemarsh in the division table. Senior Rosie Sitman was the spark in the attack, scoring the game-winning goal and assisting on the insurance tally
Defensively, it was a total group effort. On the backline, junior Shannon Connaughton, sophomore Brooke Ellener, junior Sofie Serrano, junior Morgan Welsh and junior Bailey Fichter kept the shutout while senior Cassandra Friel and freshman Evelyn Steigerwald shared the clean sheet between the posts.

Upper Dublin coach Darius Gbunblee on the win: “This was another high energy, high tempo game from our group. For the first whistle to the last, from the starters to the players that subbed in, everyone played with a lot of energy. Our senior forward Rosie Sitmen had a great game, putting one away in the first half and providing an assist to the second goal scored by Ava Shohen.”

The lights came on and the host Panthers put on a performance to match.
An early goal by sophomore Shylee Williams, who headed in an outstanding service from senior standout Faith Greenday, put the Panthers on the front foot early. Wiss wouldn’t go away, and it wasn’t until late that Quakertown sealed the win when junior Brynn Gillian buried a rebound in the 71st minute.
Scoring Summary

Quakertown coach Jon Gingrich on the win: “It was a good win for us tonight. Wissahickon is always a tough opponent, and they are coached well so we knew we had to play 80 min of strong soccer. Our energy was high, and the girls came to win.”
–Holding mids stand out: “Senior holding midfielder Jewel Renshaw and junior holding Brynn Gillian were outstanding for us tonight. They worked together to control the center of the field, they both kept good shape, won a lot of balls out of the air and found switches all night long.
“Sophomore Maya James played extremely well for us, she played shut down defense and was a menace getting down her side line for crosses and shots on goal.”
–Props up top: “Sophomore Striker Anna Gingrich played really well for us tonight. Pressuring their defense all night, finding space to win and holding the ball to keep possession for our team, she also found a lot of good passes to her teammates.”
–Standout in goal: “Sophomore Lilly Remick was great for us tonight, stopping a penalty shot, which could have given Wissahickon life and winning her box from any deep balls.”

Council Rock South 2, Bensalem 0
It had been six days since the Golden Hawks last played a match.
While they came out with good energy and moved the ball, some of that layoff showed in front of goal where they took a scoreless draw into halftime thanks to some heroics from Bensalem’s Miranda Duncan. CR South upped the intensity in the second half, leading to a couple of well-taken goals.
Ella Mayberry had the shutout in goal, the Golden Hawks having yet to allow a goal in any of their wins this fall.

CRS – Gianna Kirlin (Kate Deal) 53rd
CRS – Brianna Howard (Ruby Bross) 57th
CR South coach Nick Heim on the win: “I thought we came out moving the ball well today but were a bit flat in the final third. We seemed to be missing that drive getting to goal. We generated chances with five first half corners, but Bensalem’s goalie was going to make us earn it. At half time we stressed being in this situation before and sticking to what we do well.”
–Turning it on after halftime: “I thought we came out with a better intensity in the second half, and Kate Deal was able to find Kirlin on a through ball for a composed finish. Shortly after Ruby was able to pick out Howard on a great diagonal run where Brianna hammered it home. I was really pleased with how they answered the second half whistle.”
–Standouts on defense: “Our back line did a great job of limiting chances and keeping Ella from having to do much in goal. We generated a dozen corners which is great, but we still need to find that intensity in front of goal to start cashing those in. We turn around on the road to Pennsbury tomorrow night so hopefully we continue momentum from our second half today.”

The Indians – sparked by a pair of Bella Lanza goals – notched their sixth win without a loss, but this one was anything but easy.
“Another tough divisional battle today,” Rock North coach Gavin Flannigan said. “I think the game was very even at times, and we definitely fought hard in the second half to defend our lead.”
The Indians took a 3-0 lead in the first half, sparked by two goals from Lanza and another by Keagen Terry. The Falcons scored to make it a 3-1 game at halftime and then made things real interesting when – with 10 minutes remaining – they pulled to within one. The Indians, however, would not be denied.

Council Rock North coach Gavin Flannigan:
–On the game: “Pennsbury started well and were the better team but we were able to score from a Sarina Igval corner kick when Bella Lanza headed home. Soon after Darcy McCullough was able to slip a pass into Keagen Terry who shot from distance into the far corner and then we added a 3rd goal when Lanza hit home a rebound from a Keagan Terry header.
“Pennsbury continued to play well and threatened us, they deservedly scored off a header with about 10 mins left in the first half. In the second half I thought the game was even again, Pennsbury scored to make it 3-2 about halfway through but we were able to see the game out at the end fairly well.”
–Props: “Our goals today were well taken, and our work rate was extremely high especially in the second half. Audrey Rogan and Isabel Diaz really covered a lot of ground for us today.”

Any East-West game is going to have plenty at stake anyway, but add in the lights at War Memorial Field with both teams coming off big wins while looking to establish themselves in the division standings and Tuesday’s clash had a lot on the line.
In typical fashion between the two, both sides had a good idea what the other was going to do and chances were at a premium. East’s Taylor Roumy was responsible for a few of those chances while her teammates provided plenty of support in a collectively strong team effort that was needed to match a similarly strong showing from the host Bucks.
Roumy, who moved back to her natural spot at forward, came up with the deciding goal on a clinical finish off a Mia Forney free kick.

CBE – Taylor Roumy (Mia Forney) 26:35
CB East coach Jake Nesteruk: “Going into this one, we had a pretty good sense of where we needed to improve and how West might challenge us coming out of a really good win against CB South. I thought we settled into this game right away and found a good rhythm to our play and it showed in possession and in a couple of good chances off long services from Addie Langois and Skylar Lipp who were excellent for us today. We just lacked a bit of combination play or the ball in behind to really break through but finally created a really good chance with about eight minutes left from a good early pass from Mackenzie Peters into the feet of Taylor Roumy who turned and hit a great ball with West’s keeper making an even better save on it. West gave us a few uneasy moments throughout the half in transition and on restarts, but I thought our group with great leadership from Ava Mignon and our keeper Aralynn Patterson handled things well.”
–Second half: “I don’t think we started the second half particularly well, but created a few good chances in behind their back line which we didn’t do as much as we would’ve liked in the first. With about 15 minutes gone, we won a free kick from wide left. Mia Forney clipped in a really dangerous ball at a good height and great pace, and Taylor Roumy just had one heck of a one-touch finish with the outside of the right foot. From there I felt we kept a good rhythm about us, maintained match control, and didn’t really give anything away in transition despite some fatigue setting in. Any time you can pick up three points in this conference, it’s a good night and always fun to do it against a really disciplined West team that makes you earn everything.”
–Props: “Really proud of our group tonight as it took a bit from everyone, but I thought a couple kids in particular had really, really good nights for us. Skylar Lipp out of the back, who is just such a quiet leader for us, was just really good on the ball and in 1v1 defending tonight. Ella Roumy unlocked us in our build and maintaining possession. I thought Mackenzie Peters simply balled out. The way she combined, worked away from pressure, won second balls and counter pressed tonight made a huge difference for us.”

After almost a week between games, the Rams found themselves playing a little sluggish against a quality CB South side looking to get back on the winning track.
Thanks to a little heads-up work by defender Natalie Walter in the first half and a keen passing foot from Mikayla Loux after halftime, the Rams got their groove back and stayed unbeaten in the division. Walter, an outside back with a knack for scoring on corners, did just that in the first half, but the Titans found a way to pull one back for a halftime tie.
Loux, a sophomore who has made a mark on the front line, assisted both goals after halftime while Pennridge’s backline and senior keeper Seretha DeMoss came up with a clean final 40 minutes.
Scoring Summary

2nd half
P – Emily Hensler (Mikayla Loux)
P – Peyton Rabinowitz (Mikayla Loux).
Pennridge coach Lucas Kriner on the win: “We started off a little slow and on the back foot early on. We knew South would be aggressive, but we were having trouble matching their energy in the first 15-20. From there, we settled in. Nat’s goal was a huge lift for us. That’s what she brings: a little boost when we’re not controlling the momentum.”
–Taking charge after half: “Emily’s goal capped off a very strong opening 10 for us in the second half. She got forward and it paid off. Peyton’s rebound goal was important insurance for us and a successful scoring opportunity on the end of great team build-up. Always nice to convert a quality chance with 5-6 passes.
We continue to emphasize that we’re at our best when working together. Team efforts are the best way to approach these SOL battles. We want our girls to see that good things happen when you buy into that.
–Key players: “The back four were great tonight. Avery Runk, Addy Mills, Harper Pose and Nat Walter stayed linked up and compact, especially in transition moments to defending. Avery and Nat found a good rhythm of moments to get forward. Madigan Posey and Mikayla Loux played key parts in our goals – outstanding play from both. Seretha DeMoss came up with several important saves.”

Megan Borro delivered a highlight for the Indians on Tuesday.
With mere seconds left on the clock, Borro stepped into a shot from a long way out and hit a rainbow that found its way over the outstretched hands of the keeper to nab three points for her team. Considering the Indians felt that they’d had the go-ahead goal waved off a few minutes earlier by the officials, it was a sweet ending that also saw them tie their total division win total from a year ago before the halfway point of the conference season.

Sofia Jakimoski is a difference-maker.
The senior last year landed a spot on the all-state team. In Tennent’s opener this season, the midfielder left the game with an injury and hadn’t played another minute until Tuesday’s important clash with a Lower Moreland side that was unbeaten in the division and coming off a big win over Archbishop Carroll on Monday.
Jakimoski made her presence felt early, playing in the pivotal pass that led to the only goal to create a three-way tie atop the division standings.

William Tennent coach Elise Jara: “Excellent bounce back game for us tonight. The girls were eager to get back on the field against a divisional team and it showed. We came out with energy and speed. We connected well from back to front.”
–Jakimoski’s return: “Senior Sofia Jakimoski returned to the field after missing a few games due to injury and it was just the incentive we needed. She played a beautiful through ball to Grace Bochnak in the ninth minute of the second half. Grace had a step on the defender, kept her composure and put it in the back of the net for our only goal.”
–Props: “Bailey Kasner had a strong game as well as Mia Rahn. This really was a team win with many contributors tonight.”
Lower Moreland coach Todd Hill: “We lost a tough one to Tennent tonight. They came in with a good game plan that kept us from scoring. We had a defensive breakdown that they took advantage of, and that was the difference in the game.
–Division logjam: “We knew that our division would be really competitive this year, and it has proven to be just that. So that puts us in a three-way tie for first place almost halfway through the season. It will be a fun second half as we battle it out for the top spot.”
–Props: “Our girls played a really good game overall. Tennent put a lot of pressure on us early, but our girls made some adjustments, and we had a lot of back and forth throughout the game. Agnes Kroll remained really solid tonight as our center back. She was a steady defensive presence throughout and then took some smart opportunities to create counter attacks. Also, a shoutout to Dara Chartock who came off the bench and played a smart game in the middle of the field.”

After a challenging start to their season, the Spartans have found a bit of a groove.
Building off a galvanizing win against William Tennent last week, Springfield Twp made it two in a row thanks to a strong second half effort against Upper Moreland. Karter Brady netted a brace for the second straight game to power the Spartans’ attack.
The Golden Bears showed some grit, rallying back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to tie the game but the Spartans answered with three straight goals to lock up the three points and move into a three-way tie for first in the division.

UM – Gracie Costello 11 saves
ST – Olivia Gatewood 4 saves
Springfield Twp coach Chris Tomarelli: “Karter Brady led the scoring effort with two goals, while Ava Brnich and Karly Hartman each added one to round out a balanced offensive performance. Olivia Gatewood was outstanding in goal, making key saves to keep Upper Moreland at bay, and June Kirk turned in a standout performance all over the field. Despite the final score, Upper Moreland showed great determination and discipline, playing hard until the final whistle and reflecting the strong coaching behind their team.”
Upper Moreland coach Lisa Benvenuto: “We had a hard time finding our rhythm today. Springfield has some very strong finishers, and they were able to capitalize on their opportunities. At halftime, we regrouped and made a few adjustments to our system, which led to the equalizer when Maggie Brophy connected with Keiley Hawk, who calmly finished. We created a few more dangerous chances but couldn’t quite get them to fall our way. Gracie Costello had a tremendous performance in net, keeping us in the game with key saves. This is a match we need to learn from, and we’ll look to apply those lessons as we prepare for our next game against Lower Moreland.”
