SOUDERTON 9, METHACTON 7
The Indians opened up a 9-3 lead after five innings and then withstood a late comeback attempt by the visiting Warriors in Monday’s non-league opener.
The two teams exchanged single runs in the first inning. The Indians – capitalizing on a two-out Methacton error – plated an unearned run when Kendall Clemmer lined a two-out single to right field. They added a pair of runs in the second. Madison Byrwa lined a double to left to open the inning, and she scored when McKenna Schroding helped her own cause with an RBI single to left. A second run crossed the plate on a successfully executed double steal.
It was a 3-2 game heading into the bottom of the fourth when the Indians added a pair of runs, benefitting from a pair of Methacton miscues.
The Warriors scored a run in the top of the fifth, but the Indians responded with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. Schroding drew a leadoff walk, and with one out, Makayla Mihelcic (RBI) and Cameron Nadolski hit back-to-back singles. A walk to Kayley York loaded the bases, setting the stage for an RBI single by Sierra Miller. Clemmer drew a bases-loaded walk to send another run across the plate, and the fourth run scored on another Warrior miscue , giving the Indians their six-run advantage.
Methacton scored a pair of runs in the sixth and added two more in the seventh, but the Indians held on for the win.
Miller (2-for-4, RBI), Byrwa (2-for-4, 2B, R) and Schroding (2-for-3, RBI) led the Indians’ 11-hit attack. Clemmer had a pair of RBIs.
Schroding notched the complete game win, allowing seven hits and seven runs – only one earned – while striking out four and walking two.
Souderton (1-0) will travel to Myrtle Beach on Wednesday where the Indians will play two scrimmages and two non-league games.
