COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 20, CONESTOGA 12
The numbers – 34 hits and 32 runs – tell the story of this one.
“Today’s game was the most crazy shootout I have possibly ever witnessed,” Rock North coach Susan Yee said. “Both teams were just absolutely mashing the ball all day. It is VERY rare to see a varsity softball game with a combined 34 hits. It was just absolutely crazy.
“You would think when you have 20 runs on the board you would feel pretty darn safe that you have a win coming your way, but that was absolutely not the case at any point during this game.”
The Indians led 7-3 after three innings, but a six-run fourth gave Conestoga a 9-7 advantage that was erased in the bottom of the inning when the Indians scored a pair. The Pioneers led 10-9 entering the bottom of the fifth when the Indians offense exploded for eight runs in a wild inning that put the game out of reach.
Kayla Ripper’s near-perfect 5-for-6 day at the plate out of the leadoff spot led the Indians. Chelsea Seiler had three hits, including a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth. Also collecting three hits each were Payton Helsman (3-for-3), Zoe Hornstein and Olivia Schlindwein. Alison Bodick hit a two-run home run in a three-run third inning.
By the numbers: Kayla Ripper (5-for-6, RBI, 2R), Chelsea Seiler (3-for-5, HR, 2RBI, 3R), Zoe Hardy 2-for-3, 2B, 2RBI, 3R), Alison Bodick (2-for-3, HR, 2R, 4R), Payton Helsman 3-for-3, 2B, 3RBI, 2R), Zoe Hornstein (3-for-4, RBI, 2R), Olivia Schlindwein (3-for-5, 4RBI, 2R)
Key inning: Bottom of fifth: Trailing 10-9, the Indians scored eight runs to take a lead they would not lose. Schlindwein led off with a single to center and stole second. She scored when Kayla Ripper hit a hard ground single to center and scored on a single by Seiler. With two outs, Zoe Hardy doubled to left field, plating a run. Three straight walks, including an RBI walk to Zoe Hornstein, were followed by a two-run single from Schlindwein. Ripper beat out a bunt single, and Mia Kiskurno delivered a two-run single. (17-10)
Council Rock North coach Susan Yee: “It was just nice to see that no matter what went wrong today – whether it was a missed pitch, an error in the field, Conestoga just flat out hitting, etc, the girls stayed together, picked each other back up, and they were able to keep pace offensively to make up for it. We had 12 different girls all contribute today, and they all made a difference in solidifying the win.”
Up next: Council Rock North (3-1) will travel to Bensalem Tuesday for its league opener.
