BENSALEM 12, MERION MERCY 2 (6 innings)
The Owls played their annual awareness game Saturday. The team supported a second grader from Bensalem (Lina) who was diagnosed with ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder).
Bensalem got on the board in the first inning. Ayva Knowles hit a lead-off triple, and Megan Klein drew a walk. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single from Adrianna Vargas, and a two-run single from Lina Sponheimer.
They carried that momentum into the second inning, putting up four runs in both the second and later, the fourth inning. In the second, Kayla Clarkson drew a walk to open the inning, and that was followed by four singles in a row from Klein, Vargas, Sponheimer and Camryn Pickering.
In the fourth, Vargas, Sponheimer and Pickering walked, and Ashlyn Merz smacked a two-RBI double. Destiny Howard and Kiera Seidman reached on an error and a walk, respectively, and Clarkson hit a sac fly that put the Owls on top 11-1.
The final run that brought an early end to the game came after Merz singled to lead off the fifth inning, Howard and Knowles walked to load the bases, and Klein drew a bases loaded walk that put the mercy rule into effect.
“Meg Klein started the season slow, but she’s been seeing the ball well these last two games,” Bensalem coach Erin Smith said. “Today she reached base in all five plate appearances with two singles and three walks. She also swiped three bases.”
Clarkson notched the win in the circle.
Bensalem (3-4, 1-4 SOL) will host Neshaminy on Monday.
