Check out the recaps for SOL softball teams in action Friday.
SOL Liberty Division
UPPER DUBLIN 1, HATBORO-HORSHAM 0
This was a classic pitcher’s duel.
Kyla Garrison and Kennedy Conn both turned in gems in the circle Neither deserved to lose, and in the end, it came down to the Cardinals capitalizing on a pair of costly Hatter errors to plate an unearned run in the fifth inning.
Garrison notched win, allowing three hits in seven shutout innings and striking out eight. The Cards managed just two hits off Conn, who struck out 10.
By the numbers: Upper Dublin: Kyla Garrison (W) (7.0 IP, 3H, 0R, 1BB, 8K)
Hatboro-Horsham: Kennedy Conn (7 IP, 2H 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 10K)
Key inning: Top of fifth: After Conn retired the first two batters she faced on strikeouts, Maddie Small laid down a bunt and was safe on a Hatter miscue. UD leadoff batter Madden Reilly hit a ball between deep short and left center that the Hatters’ outfielder laid out for and had in her glove only to see it pop out when she hit the ground. An errant throw to the infield allowed Small to score the game’s only run. (1-0)
Upper Dublin coach Heather Boyer: “It was definitely a pitcher’s duel – Kennedy Conn for Hatboro had a good game, and Kyla (Garrison) threw a really good game. They both threw great games, and they both had good composure and really grinded to the end.
“ It was a quick game. Honestly, it just came down to execution. Both teams had five runners left on base, the number of errors was very close. It was just who got lucky.”
–An opportunity to learn: “We talked about it after the game – these are the games that help you build character, build experience and learn. There were certain things – we didn’t execute a couple of bunts we needed to, and we missed a sign where it was a hit-and-run. Those little things are what we need to execute better as move through the season, so they’re learning opportunities to get better as a team as we are still in the first third of the season. Better teams are going to take advantage of it, so we have to execute and fix it.”
Hatboro-Horsham coach Bob Sadowl: “Kennedy pitched more than good enough to win. We just don’t seem to get a break when we need it, losing all three league games by one run. Maybe with a little more focus they will break through. Garrison did a nice job in the circle for Upper Dublin.”
–Props: “Kennedy Conn pitched a two hitter, striking out 10 and walking one while picking up one of the Hatters three hits. Madison Karpovich had the only extra base hit with a double. Molly Harrington had the other hit for the Hatters. Sydney Cassel made a stellar play on a rocket hit to third.”
