It was another action-packed Wednesday in the Suburban One League. All 24 boys soccer teams played league games. The results and recaps are below.
National Conference
William Tennent 1, Neshaminy 0
Tennant won its second straight 1-0 game Wednesday afternoon, improving to 2-1 in SOL National play, just three points behind first place Abington.
“The game could have gone either way,” Tennent coach Ryan Todt said. “Every little detail in the game could have determined the game.
“Our kids played with a lot of heart. They had to defend and be really, really quick all over the field, and the kids really did step up for us. (This win) really does mean a lot. We needed a big win at this time of the season, and I think it could really springboard us toward the future.”
In the 60th minute, after a scoreless first half, Dan Mehaffey crossed the ball to Tony Ciarlante, who headed it into the net.
Tennent keeper Brendan Hanratty stopped seven shots and recorded his second straight shutout. Hanratty has made 10 saves in his last two starts. Chris Rush had eight saves in goal for the Redskins.
Todt credited the performances of several players in the big win.
“One of the big factors of our success has been Steve Orliw,” the Panthers’ coach said of his outside left back. “He’s playing very physical and very strong, and he’s even joining the attack here and there. He seems to really have a pulse on the ball and reading the game.”
Ciarlante and Kyle Delavan also stepped up in the win.
“We have a rotation of five forwards, and I kind of rotate who starts and who comes off the bench, and between the other three and those two – I really think they give us that extra motor, and they play with a lot of heart and passion, and it really keeps the spirits up on the team,” Todt said.
The win broke a losing streak at the hands of the Redskins dating back to since Oct. 25, 2009, when Tennent downed Neshaminy 3-0.
William Tennent (2-1, 2-1 SOL) goes for its third straight win Friday afternoon against Council Rock South. Neshaminy (1-5, 1-3 SOL) will try to snap its skid on the same day against Council Rock North.
William Tennent 0-1 1
Neshaminy 0-0 0
Abington 4, CR South 2
Abington’s Juan Castillo did not score in the first three games of the SOL National season. Castillo broke out his slump Wednesday afternoon by scoring twice.
“He needed them badly,” said Abington coach Randy Garber. “Both were in the box and he buried them.”
The Ghosts scored three of their four goals in the first 20 minutes of the first half. Matt Bachman netted the first goal less than 10 minutes in, and Castillo scored the next two. David Pohle booted home the last goal with 10 minutes left in the half to send the Ghosts into halftime with a 4-0 lead.
South scored twice in the second half, both on restarts. South’s second goal came on a penalty kick with five minutes left in the game.
Ghosts’ keeper Sam Wells made five saves.
Garber’s team won its third league game and stayed in first place with nine points.
Abington (4-1, 3-1 SOL) hosts Bensalem Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Golden Hawks (1-3, 1-2 SOL) play at William Tennant on the same day and time.

With four minutes left in double overtime, Skyler Goldstein blazed the ball into the net from 25 yards out to propel the Colonials to the dramatic win. The goal was unassisted.
Wissahickon led 1-0 at halftime, thanks to an Andrew Pileggi goal in the 31st minute, but the Colonials tied it after the break when – in the 63rd minute – Gavin Hendrick booted the ball past the keeper from 20 yards away.
PW leapfrogged Wissahickon in the standings and climbed into a first place tie with Cheltenham. Both clubs have seven points.

Wissahickon 1-0-0-0 1
Plymouth Whitemarsh 0-1-0-1 2
Cheltenham 1, Springfield 0
For the second time in a week, an offsides call almost forced Cheltenham to settle for a tie instead of a win.
Last Wednesday, against Upper Merion, Jake Ruckett’s overtime goal was nullified and Cheltenham settled for a 2-2 tie. On Wednesday night, Ruckett blasted the ball into the net in the 12th minute but was ruled offsides on the one-yard line.
But this time, the Panthers refused to settle. In the 71st minute, Eli Tomasic lofted the ball from the left flank to a streaking Scarphins Codio in front of the net. Codio rocketed the ball home and Cheltenham took a 1-0 lead.
Goalkeeper Justin Garvey took care of the rest, stopping four shots in the last nine minutes to keep Springfield off the board. Garvey stoned six shots in all.
Cheltenham (2-1-1, 2-0-1 SOL) is tied with Plymouth Whitemarsh atop the American standings. The Panthers battle Norristown at home on Friday afternoon. Springfield (1-3, 1-2 SOL) buses to Upper Moreland for a 3:30 p.m. start.
Cheltenham 0-1 1
Springfield 0-0 0
Upper Dublin 8, Upper Moreland 1
Upper Dublin netted eight goals on 15 shots to bury Upper Moreland and climb above .500 in league play.
Jose Palomeque and Ryan Huggins scored in the fourth and 23rd minutes for the Cardinals. But the first half was just an appetizer.
Upper Dublin’s offense exploded for six goals after halftime.
“In the second half, everything seemed to go in the net,” said Cardinals coach Derek Priest.
Nick Browndorf scored in the 43rd minute, Jake Rosen in the 48th, Justin Greene in the 51st, Huggins again in the 60th, Todd Spirt in the 72nd, and Max Spiegel in the 80th.
