MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
La Salle junior Chris Berry (Central Bucks West) finished 54th with a time of 21:06 at the Main line Invitational at Haverford College on Friday.
Senior Alex Izewski (Central Bucks East) was Temple’s top finisher at the Main Line Invite on Friday, placing 10th and completing the four-mile course in 19:57.
Shippensburg sophomore Alex Balla (Quakertown) posted a time of 26:42 to finish 11th at Kutztown’s Division II/III Challenge. The Red Raiders, who won the team title, had all five of their scoring runners finish among the top 12.
Penn sophomore Ross Wilson (Council Rock North) posted a time of 19:34 to finish fourth overall at the Main Line Invitational on Friday night. Penn captured the men’s team title.
Penn State Abington senior Alex Kane (Central Bucks East) finished second out of 52 competitors with a time of 29:30.1 at the annual Penn State Abington Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Billy Donovan (Upper Moreland) improved his time on the Lorimer course by a staggering 2:44 with a time of 32:04.4, good for eighth overall. Rounding out the scorers for Penn State Abington were freshmen Alek Clementson (William Tennent), who finished 15th with a time of 33:10.2, and Minaam Ahmed (Pennsbury), who posted a time of 39:19.7 and crossed the finish line in 35th place. The Nittany Lions captured the team title.
IUP sophomore Austin Cooper (Upper Merion) posted a time of 25:44.78 and finished in 43rd place at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite on Friday. The men’s team finished eighth out of 12 teams.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State senior Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) was named both the Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week as
well as a U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Women’s Athlete of the Week following a dominant performance at the Harry Groves Spiked Invitational. Led by the senior captain, the No. 23 Nittany Lions women’s team claimed the team title for the second consecutive week. Gerlach set the pace as she raced to her second win of the year, helping her teammates claim the team title over No. 10 West Virginia, No. 17 Syracuse and Grove City. The Pennridge graduate posted a time of 21:30 on the 6,000-meter course, finishing nine seconds ahead of second place. The Nittany Lions do not compete again until Oct. 3 when they travel to Kentucky for the Greater Louisville Classic.
La Salle redshirt freshman Kaitlin Poiesz (Central Bucks South) was named Atlantic 10 Women’s Cross Country
Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 13 following her performance at the Big 5 Invitational. The CB South graduate turned in the top performance of the day while leading the Explorers to a sixth place finish. Poiesz posted a time of 14:25.1 on the 4k course at the Belmont Plateau. She was just 13.4 seconds off of the pace and was the top freshman finisher in the race.
Shippensburg freshman Jackie Kinkead (Central Bucks East) posted a time of 25:10 in her first collegiate 6k at Kutztown’s Division II/III Challenge on Saturday.
Bloomsburg senior Kate Dodds (Upper Dublin) was named the PSAC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the
Week for the period ending Sept. 12. Dodds captured first place and the Bloomsburg women’s cross country team took the top four spots to easily win the Flatlander Quad at Mansfield University. The Huskies finished with 25 points while Mercyhurst was second with 42 points. Dodds, a returning All-American paced the field of 46 runners on the 5k course finishing in 17:52, beating her teammate to the line by 23 seconds. Dodds is coming off an All-American season in cross country as a junior and also earned All-American honors in track and field after finishing third at 10,000 meters at the NCAA Championships in May.
Kutztown freshman Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) had the second best time for KU at the sixth annual 6K Division II/III Challenge hosted by the Golden Bears, finishing in 15th with a time of 24:28.9 mark. Olivia Dettore (Central Bucks West) ran 25:39.3 and place 44th. KU finished fourth in the team standings.
FIELD HOCKEY
Rachel Valentine (Souderton) scored a pair of goals in Lock Haven’s 4-1 win over visiting Georgetown on
Saturday. Maddie Wagenfeld (Hatboro-Horsham) notched three saves in goal to pick up her second win of the season. In last Sunday’s 2-0 win over Siena, Valentine scored her fifth goal of the season.
Sophomore Megan Hamilton (Central Bucks South) scored on the rebound of a goalie save in Providence College’s 6-1 win over Brown on Wednesday.
Lauren Becker (Wissahickon) contributed an assist in No. 5 Stanford’s 4-2 win over Kent State last Sunday. The assist gave Becker – who had two goals and two assists in Stanford’s 7-0 rout of St. Louis – seven points in two game.
Cassidy Barrow (North Penn) assisted on a goal in Albright’s 6-1 win over Keystone on Thursday.
Ashley Laskowitz (Wissahickon) had the insert pass on a corner goal in Miami University’s 2-1 win over Longwood on Friday.
Freshman Shelby Landis (Souderton) collected two saves in Messiah College’s 1-0 loss to No. 1 The College of New Jersey on Saturday night.
Freshman Katherine McVeagh (Springfield) contributed an assist in the University of Scranton’s 3-2 win over Misericordia on Wednesday.
Goalie Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) recorded her first solo shutout of the season with five saves in The College of New Jersey’s 1-0 win over Messiah College on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 6-1 triumph over Cabrini, Schlupp collected her fourth win of the season with three saves.
Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored her team’s only goal in Quinnipiac’s 4-1 loss to Maine on Thursday.
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Abigail Gabriel (Souderton) was named the Colonial States Athletic Conference
Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 12. Gabriel scored a goal and added an assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 shutout of FDU-Madison. It was the squad’s first win of the season.
Katie O’Neill (Council Rock North) contributed a goal and an assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 7-0 win at Stockton on Saturday.
Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored in the 51st minute in Kutztown’s 3-1 win over IUP on Friday.
FOOTBALL
Steve Gozur (North Penn) had eight tackles – including three for a loss and one sack – in Widener’s 27-10 loss to Albright on Saturday.
Senior Josh Cook (North Penn) had 1.5 tackles for a loss in Lycoming’s 58-24 win over Wilkes University on Saturday.
Kip Patton (Norristown) had three catches for 48 yards while teammate Brandon Shippen (Norristown) had two catches for 32 yards and two carries for 10 in Temple’s 25-23 win over the University of Massachusetts on Saturday.
Shippensburg senior Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 20 after returning a punt for a touchdown in Shippensburg’s 34-26 loss to
California (Pa.) on Saturday. Mayer opened the second half scoring and started SU’s comeback effort at Cal with 6:38 left in the third quarter by returning a punt 82 yards for a touchdown. It was the second punt return touchdown of Mayer’s career. He ran one back 85 yards for a score at Slippery Rock in 2013. Also on Saturday, Mayer led the Red Raiders with 10 catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Mayer is now second in NCAA Division II among active career leaders for punt return yards with 725. He has averaged 13.4 yards per punt return on 54 career attempts. Teammate Darius Wills (Norristown) had five tackles in Saturday’s loss.
Redshirt senior wide receiver Gerard Wendowski (North Penn) caught a six-yard touchdown pass for his first career score in East Stroudsburg’s 56-12 win over Edinboro Saturday. He finished with three catches for 49 yards.
Matt Johns (Central Bucks South) threw three touchdown passes in Virginia’s 35-29 win over William & Mary on Saturday. Johns completed 17-of-23 passes for 263 yards. He threw touchdown passes of three and 26 yards in the first half.
Freshman Craig Reynolds (Abington) had eight catches for 73 yards in Kutztown’s 66-31 loss to Gannon on Saturday in a game that saw the two teams combine for 1,202 yards of total offense. KU posted 495 yards of total offense with 412 coming through the air. Kenny Williams (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a career high 11 tackles in the secondary.
Junior running back Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 50 yards on 11 carries in Ursinus College’s 17-13 loss to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Senior kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) connected on field goals of 39 and 23 yards.
Senior Brandon Pepper (Pennsbury) had an interception and three solo tackles in West Chester’s 48-38 win over visiting Seton Hill on Saturday. Junior wide receiver Shannon Mayer (Norristown) hauled in a 38-yard touchdown pass and finished with four catches for 82 yards. Kevin Duggan (Central Bucks West) shared the team high with six tackles. Ralph Reeves (North Penn) and Zack Hockman (Pennridge) both had four tackles.
MEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Johnny Ciarlante (William Tennent) headed a cross into the net in the 13th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead in La Salle’s 2-1 win over Rider on Tuesday.
Tyler Sablyak (Central Bucks West) headed home a pass into the net in Lock Haven’s 2-1 win over Gannon University on Saturday. The goal was Sablyak’s first of the season.
Junior Tyler Whitehead (Upper Dublin) scored with five seconds left in the first overtime to propel Shippensburg to a 2-1 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in a PSAC matchup on Tuesday. Whitehead’s golden goal was the first of his career and came on a scramble drill just before the first overtime horn.
Junior Jake Nesteruk (Central Bucks East) was credited with four saves in The College of New Jersey’s 3-2 loss to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday night. In Wednesday’s 2-2 tie at FDU-Florham, Nesteruk recorded a pair of saves.
Austin Transue (Neshaminy) scored a goal in overtime to propel Bloomsburg to a 1-0 win over Seton Hill on Saturday. The Neshaminy graduate took a rebound off of the crossbar and put it away in the bottom left corner of the net to give Bloomsburg the win. In Tuesday’s 2-0 shutout win of Lock Haven, Kenny Herrmann (Neshaminy) scored on a sliding kick past the diving goalie after a corner kick. Transue assisted on an insurance goal in the 87th minute.
Tyler Afflerbach (Souderton) was credited with a pair of saves in Drexel’s 2-0 win over Penn on Friday.
Richard Domico (Neshaminy) notched his fourth goal of the season in the second minute of Penn State Abington’s 2-1 win over Bryn Athyn on Saturday afternoon.
Devon Memis (Wissahickon) headed the ball into the net for his first collegiate goal to spot his team a 1-0 lead in Philadelphia University’s 2-0 win over Mercy on Tuesday.
Junior forward Alex Lean (Council Rock North) took control of a rebound and blasted it past the goalkeeper to lift West Chester over California (Pa.) 1-0 in the first overtime period on Saturday afternoon.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Marissa Sheva (Pennridge) tallied her first collegiate goal in No. 4 Penn State’s 4-0 win over Wisconsin on Thursday night. Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) scored her fourth goal of the season in a win that upped the Nittany Lions’ record to 6-1-1 on the season.
West Virginia junior Carly Black (Hatboro-Horsham) is expected to miss the remainder of the 2015 season after suffering a torn ACL during the Mountaineers’ 2-0 win at Ohio State. Black, a defender, has started all 52 career games at center back. She has six career points (one goal, four assists).
Brittany Mitchell (William Tennent) contributed an assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 4-0 win over Cedar Crest on Saturday.
Senior Erin Lafferty (Upper Dublin) headed a pass into the net for her career high fifth goal of the season in Temple’s 3-0 win over La Salle on Friday. In last Sunday’s 4-1 win over Binghamton, Lafferty scored on a free kick from near midfield.
Grace Miorelli (Souderton) tied the school single season record with three assists in Cedarville’s 5-1 win over Alderson Broaddus on Wednesday.
Freshman Brianna Rock (Bensalem) contributed an assist in Holy Family’s 4-2 win over Wilmington on Wednesday.
Junior forward Erin Farrell (Neshaminy) scored on a rebound with less than seven minutes left in the second overtime to lift Ursinus College to a 1-0 win over Gettysburg on Saturday night.
Zoe Traficante (Central Bucks West) scored her team’s first goal 1:36 into Virginia Wesleyan’s 15-0 rout of Hollins on Friday.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) set up the second goal in Elizabethtown’s 7-1 romp over Penn State Harrisburg on Friday. In last Sunday’s 4-3 double overtime win over St. Mary’s (Md.), Cerankowski’s timely first goal of the season sent the Blue Jays home a winner.
MEN’S TENNIS
Mohammed Ammouni (Bensalem) earned a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win at first singles while Justin McNab (Cheltenham) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at third doubles in Penn State Abington’s 8-1 win over Albright on Saturday. Ammouni and McNab also paired up to earn an 8-5 win at first doubles.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Amanda Shulski(Neshaminy) notched a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 win in second doubles in Penn State Abington’s 7-2 win over Albright on Saturday. She also was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-3 win. In Wednesday’s 9-0 win over Delaware Valley, Shulski earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at second singles and was part of an 8-5 win at second doubles.
Kristen Kriebel (Pennridge) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth doubles while Jenna Caffarello (North Penn) notched a 6-3, 6-1 win at fifth doubles in Gwynedd Mercy’s 9-0 win over Notre Dame of Maryland on Saturday. Kriebel also was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-1 win, and Caffarello was part of the third doubles team that won by an 8-1 score. In Wednesday’s 5-4 loss to Scranton, Caffarello was an 8-3 winner at number six doubles, and Kriebel and Caffarello paired up for an 8-4 win at third doubles.
Junior Claire Uhle (Wissahickon) won her first singles match 6-2, 6-0 to lead West Chester at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships Saturday morning. Uhle teamed up with Maddy Shan to win their only doubles match of the day, 8-3. In Last Sunday at the 2015 PSAC Individual Championships hosted by Bloomsburg University, Uhle earned a spot in the semifinals with wins of Sara Ruiz (SHI) and Claudia Menes (IUP) to reach the quarterfinals. She then topped IUP’s Luis von Agris before falling to Cal’s Kiefer Shaw, who was the top-ranked individual at the championships. Uhle entered as the 3-4 seed.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Eryn Brady (Upper Merion) recorded seven kills in 15 attempts with zero errors to hit .467 in York College’s 3-0 loss to Penn State Behrend on Saturday at the 2015 Hampton Inn Crusader Classic at Susquehanna University. In York’s 3-0 loss to Baldwin Wallace later in the day, Brady had another big match, finishing with 10 kills in 23 attempts as she hit .348 for the match. The UM graduate had 10 of the Spartans’ 21 kills in the match. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Susquehanna in York’s first match of the tournament, Brady led the Spartans with five kills and also had seven digs and two block assists. In York’s 3-2 win in the nightcap Friday, Brady had six kills, four aces, four digs, a solo block and a block assist.
Freshman Candyce Riley (Hatboro-Horsham) had a team high 11 digs in Holy Family’s 3-1 loss at LIU Post on Saturday. Sophomore Cecilia Weir (William Tennent) added seven digs. In Holy Family’s 3-0 loss to Franklin Pierce in Saturday’s tri-match, Weir had nine digs while Riley had eight. In Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to Bloomfield, Riley set a new season high with 30 digs while freshman Kelly Bergen (Pennridge) recorded 13 digs.
Senior Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) had 22 assists and freshman Ashley Shannon (Upper Merion) had 14 digs in Cabrini’s 3-0 loss to Elizabethtown on Saturday at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic. In Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Moravian, Koenig had 30 assists and nine digs, and Shannon also had nine digs.
Freshman Sam Jones (Hatboro-Horsham) had 21 digs in Kent State’s split at the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday. Kent State fell to Sacramento State (3-1) and came back to defeat Nevada (3-1).
Danielle Dyjak (Abington) had 25 assists in two matches on Saturday when Penn State Abington traveled to Morrisville, N.Y., for its first day of NEAC Pool play tournament on Saturday. In Thursday’s 3-0 sweep of Rosemont, freshman Maddi Richards (William Tennent) had seven kills while Corey Pecuch (Council Rock North) chipped in 14 assists and freshman Catherine Zhushma (William Tennent) led the team with eight digs.
Penn State Abington freshman Catherine Zhushma (William Tennent) was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 12. Zhushma racked up 56 digs over the week and had a match best 33 digs in the Nittany Lions come-from-behind 3-2 win over Gwynedd Mercy. Zhushma ranks second in the conference with 124 digs.
Junior outside hitter Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) had a career best 27 kills with a dazzling .455 hitting percentage in No. 15 Eastern’s 3-1 win over Elizabethtown at the Days Inn Invitational at Elizabethtown on Saturday. She earned a spot on the all-tournament. In Friday’s 3-0 win over No. 22 Carnegie Mellon, Elechko led the Eagles with 11 kills. In Wednesday’s 3-0 sweep of Delaware Valley, Elechko had five kills in the opening set.
Senior Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had a career high 24 kills and a team-leading three blocks in Kutztown’s 3-1 loss to West Liberty on Saturday. In KU’s 3-0 loss to Fairmont State, Stringer led the Golden Bears with 13 kills and a team high seven blocks. She now has seven matches with double-digit kills this season and has recorded 10 or more kills in 22 of her previous 30 matches. Stringer is currently ranked eighth all-time in KU history with 886 kills and ninth all-time with 305 blocks. Freshman Niki Carpenter (Upper Merion) recorded five blocks. In Friday’s 3-1 win over Shepherd, Stringer had 13 kills and a team high six blocks.
