Check out the results for SOL girls’ volleyball teams in action Thursday.
UPPER MERION 3, CHELTENHAM 0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-6)
Carlye Odorisio reached a milestone in Thursday’s American Conference match at Cheltenham. The senior setter surpassed the 1,000-assist mark – the third player in Upper Merion history to reach that milestone.
“To get a thousand assists, you have to be on a pretty good team, and you usually have to play a 5-1 because you have to be touching the ball all the time,” coach Tony Funsten said. “Carlye played on a great team when she was a freshman, and she didn’t get to set at all.
“Her sophomore year we ran a 6-2, and last year we ran a 5-1 pretty much the whole year except for the very end, and now she’s running the 5-1 again. You have to have your opportunities, but she’s made the most of them too.
“As a setter, she betters the ball. If we put her assists and kills together, then we’d be talking about giant numbers because – this year especially – she’s a very good attacker.”
It’s not unusual for Odorisio to put up big numbers in more than one category.
“Just about every match this year she’s had a double-double of some sort and sometimes a triple-double,” Funsten said. “She’s a great server, she’s a good attacker, and she’s a good setter, so it might be service points and assists. It might be kills and assists, and it might be all three.
“She’s just been really the heart of everything we’re doing this year. She’s a good athlete, but she’s a real games person. She’s always looking for an edge and how to get an advantage. If she can get an advantage by setting the ball, she’ll set the ball. If she can get an advantage by dumping the ball, she’ll dump the ball. Whatever she can do to help the team win, that’s what she does.
“At Upper Merion, we’ve always given our setters the freedom to attack, to stretch the defense because we feel if the setter is a weapon, defenders have to worry about her, and it makes the hitters even better It’s the way we do it at Upper Merion, and she kind of epitomizes what we’ve done.”
Odorisio joins Cassidy Koenig and Paula Funsten as the only players to reach the milestone.
In Thursday’s win, Carolyn Helenski had 14 kills as the Lady Vikings upped their record to 7-0.
