HARRY S TRUMAN 73, CHICHESTER 63
The Tigers made their road trip to Chichester a good one, exploding for 24 points in the third quarter to blow open a close game.
Kelechi Ogbonna scored 23 points to lead the Tigers, and Maurice Jackson added 15 points and nine rebounds. Danell Snelling also finished in double figures with 11. James Clowney had six points and nine rebounds. Quin McQueen and Satchell Simpson both scored seven points.
The Tigers trailed 21-17 after one quarter but outscored their hosts 19-13 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 36-34 advantage. The third quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Tigers went on a 24-14 tear.
“I challenged the kids the other day because we came out slow against Glen Mills on opening night,” coach Byron Conover said. “I challenged them – we need to get off to a fast start, we need to come out ready to play.
“We did, but we couldn’t stop anybody on defense. We couldn’t stop them, but they couldn’t stop us either. In the third quarter, we went to a little zone press, and we got some stops. We started getting them in foul trouble – we fouled three kids out. We started getting to the rack and doing things we needed to be doing.”
If there was a down side in the loss, it was the Tigers’ turnovers.
“I told them after the game – ‘We had 18 turnovers against a team that played zone all night. What are we going to do when we play Abington and Pennsbury?” “Conover said. “But I’ll take the win.
“It’s a young season. We’re still working on the chemistry. I’m still working on my rotation on the bench – see which kids will step up, but they’re playing hard, and we’re competing.”
Harry S Truman (1-1) will begin SOL play on Wednesday at Council Rock South.
“I told the kids that Council Rock South is going to be ready to play, and we need to come out with the same fire and passion and energy,” Conover said. “We’re on the road again, and we’re going to their gym, which has been difficult for us over the years.”
