Boys
NORTH PENN 10, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 5
The Knights trailed 4-3 at halftime but turned in an inspired second half performance to earn the important conference win.
“They were doing a really good job of controlling the ball in the first half,” North Penn coach Rick Smith said of the Bucks. “CB West had really good possessions, and they took advantage of every possession they had.
“They were doing a really good job in the first half of dominating our face-off man. They put two long poles out there, and they were getting possessions off the face-offs.”
Things changed dramatically in the second half for both teams. Jake Diamond began controlling the face-offs and Matt Rinck – who finished with 21 saves in a stellar performance – was impenetrable in goal.
“Matt Rinck once again stood on his head,” Smith said. “He had an outstanding game between the pipes in goal. He was just unbelievable.”
“Jake Diamond was a difference maker in the second half. We made some adjustments at halftime, and it really worked for Jake. He had a lot more success in the second half. Once again, we had possession of the ball and we’re scoring goals. In the second quarter, we didn’t have possession of the ball, and we weren’t scoring goals.
“We really ride Jake’s shoulders. Jake takes this team on his back and says, ‘Come with me.’ When Jake brings his energy, the whole team follows him. That’s why he’s such a good leader for us. Jake and Owen Kelly did a really good job.”
The Knights used a 4-0 third quarter to go on top 7-4 and added to that lead with a 3-1 fourth quarter.
“The game of lacrosse is about momentum,” Smith said. “When the momentum is on your side, you just have to take advantage of it.
“The guys weren’t real happy with their performance in the second quarter, and they came out in the third and fourth quarters and played really well. They played team lacrosse. Everyone was contributing.”
Sparking the Knights’ defense was Owen Kelly.
“Owen Kelly did an outstanding job once again,” Smith said. “He had a goal on the fast break, and he drew Will Ross for the game.
“Will got his goals, but Owen did a really good job playing him one-and-one. Once again, it was that team idea on defense. We did a really good job in the second half.”
Reece Udinski led the Knights’ attack with four goals while Eric Homan had two goals and two assists. Jake Diamond had three goals and one assist while Eric Diamond and Nic Conroy both had a pair of assists. Kelly added a goal, and Max Lehman had an assist.
