University of California senior Nicole Beck (Hatboro-Horsham) was one of three recipients of the 2016
Oscar Geballe Award, given annually to student-athletes that exemplify the combination of scholarship and competition. It comes with a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship. Beck’s career was cut short by two ACL injuries. After missing the 2015 season, she came back and was ready for 2016 before re-injuring her knee. Still, she remained with the program and assisted the Bears’ coaching staff in a variety of ways. Beck plans on becoming a dentist and will attend the Harvard School of Dental Medicine this fall. “I obviously had a really unique situation and a really difficult decision whether I wanted to continue with the team,” Beck said in a news release issued by the college. “Although it was hard being on the sidelines, I think I would have been more upset not being with my best friends and teammates every day and the coaching staff. The Cal athletics family could not have been more supportive. I am so grateful for that.”
In her 64th and final career game, senior defender Caroline Hagan (Hatboro-Horsham) matched a career-high with five grounds in St. Joseph’s 13-8 loss to No. 16 UMass in the A-10 Championship semifinals on Friday. She was named the BIG EAST Attacker of the Week on April 25 after totaling a league-best 11 total points in two crucial wins for the Owls against Villanova and Connecticut.

After the game-tying shot was blocked in seventh-ranked West Chester’s 12-11 victory over No. 11 IUP in the PSAC semifinals on Friday, Sarah Gebre (Central Bucks West) scooped up the ensuing ground ball to secure the win. “Gebre face-guarded the conference player of the year (Amy Weinberg) and did a great job on her,” WCU coach Ginny Martino said. “She didn’t allow her any goals and just one assist all game. That took away (IUP’s) feeder and forced them out of what they are comfortable doing.”
SOFTBALL

La Salle junior Val Buehler (Pennsbury) and senior Ali Waddington (Central Bucks South) are two of the newest Phillies ball girls. For both Explorers, it was a stroke of good timing and little bit of flexibility that led to a one-year contract with the ball club. The tryout included some softball drills, an interview in the media room and a short quiz about the current Phillies team. In addition to being positioned on the foul lines
retrieving baseballs, Phillies ball girls staff the 50/50 kiosks in the concourse and are members of the “Red Go Green” teams that help recycle around the ballpark. To get a position on the field, the girls go through a training process that involves shadowing a current ball girl for several games in a row. Both Explorers have been Phillies fans for as long as they can remember. Buehler’s grandparents have had season tickets for decades and the speech pathology major was at Citizens Bank Park for the 2008 World Series clinching victory. Waddington also remembers the 2008 season and attending a Phillies parade that Hatboro threw for the world champions. Buehler will return for her senior year, but Waddington – who has been heavily involved on campus as a La Salle student Ambassador, public relations intern for the Philadelphia Eagles and the University’s Homecoming Queen – will be graduating on May 22. She will remain at La Salle next year as the athletic department’s Project Teamwork graduate assistant while pursuing a master’s in professional and business communication.
