Check out the recaps for SOL boys’ lacrosse teams in action Monday.
AVON GROVE 8, UPPER DUBLIN 5
The Flying Cardinals are second only to Avon Grove in the latest District One 3A rankings, and they proved that they could play with the Red Devils, trailing by just one midway through the third quarter, 5-4.
Many coaches would have been satisfied to simply stay with the defending state champions. UD coach Dave Sowers is not in that group.
“We didn’t come here to hang,” the Flying Cardinals’ coach said. “We came here to win, and we didn’t make good decisions.
“We made mistakes that absolutely you can’t make against a really good team like that. We didn’t come here to hang. We came here to beat them, and there’s no doubt – we believe if we play hard enough we could have. We went down 3-0, and part of it is because, I think, we didn’t believe. We were believing, ‘Oh, they’re the state champs, and they have nine Division I players,’ and this and that. We finally said, ‘No, we can,’ but down the stretch, it was just making bad decisions.”
The Flying Cardinals – who fell behind 3-0 – clawed their way back in the game. Trailing 5-4, they won the ensuing draw but turned the ball over. The Red Devils capitalized.
“You cannot make those kinds of mistakes against a team like that,” Sowers said.
It was a 6-4 when – in the closing seconds of the third quarter – the Cards were stonewalled on a shot in close.
The Red Devils went up 7-4, but the Cards pulled to within two when Brian McCarry found the net. That’s as close as they would get the rest of the way.
“That last play – we’re a man up, and we’re shooting the ball and not having a backup,” Sowers said of a play with time winding down. “They were the things that really bit us in the tail end today. We just didn’t play well enough to beat a team of that caliber.”
Despite the outcome, Sowers knows that his team can only benefit from playing a team of Avon Grove’s caliber.
“We needed this,” the Cardinals’ coach said. “I still believe we have the will to play with a team like that and beat a team like that, but you have to play smart, and we didn’t today, so that’s the outcome.”
Max Winebrake led the Cardinals with two goals and one assist while Jed Hanson, Carey Romig and McCarry had one goal each. Jerry Bardol added an assist.
UD goalie Dillon Lojeski recorded 14 saves, including some brilliant stops on shots at point blank range.
Anthony Cerminara and Nick Sowers both had four ground balls to lead the Cards in that category. Romig and Bardol both had three ground balls while McCarry, Jake DiMartile and Luke Roselli each had two ground balls. DiMartile also had a caused turnover.
Avon Grove’s Nate Hammond won 13-of-17 face-offs. Zach Augustine and Joey Borcky both had two goals and one assist to lead the Red Devils.
