Joey Stella turned a Nicholas Knepp pass into a goal with 9.06 seconds remaining in regulation, breaking a 4-4 tie and propelling the visiting Patriots to a dramatic win over a Cougar squad ranked fourth in the District One 3A power rankings.
“This was a win for team,” East coach Bruce Garcia said. “It did not matter if you were on the bench or on the field – they all contributed.”
Limiting the Cougars to just four goals required a heroic defensive effort, beginning with goalie Ryan Kueny who turned away 14 shots in a stellar outing.
“(Ryan) Kueny stood on his head,” Garcia said. “(Evan) Bullotta played exceptional along with Ryan McCauley, Brennan Coleman, Mark Lapioli and especially our short stick midfielders, Dean Blackwell and Ethan Greenlee.”
Another key was the standout effort of Nils Updale, who – according to Garcia – won 85 percent of the faceoffs.
Bullotta’s six ground balls and three caused turnovers led the Patriots. Lapioli had two ground balls and a team high four caused turnovers, and Greenlee had three ground balls and one caused turnover. Blackwell was credited with one ground ball and two caused turnovers. Knepp had two ground balls, and adding one ground ball each were Funston and Coleman.
Jonah Osborne’s hat trick led the attack. Stella added a goal and assist, Chris Funston contributed one goal and Luke Christmas chipped in an assist.
The Cougars led 1-0 after one quarter, and the two teams exchanged goals in the second period with Osborne connecting on both Patriot goals – the first with a Stella assist. Osborne’s third goal was the lone score in the third period, and the two teams went into the final quarter deadlocked 3-3. Funston scored an unassisted goal with 6:16 remaining to put the Patriots on top, but less than a minute later, the Cougars knotted the score, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
