COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 2, PENNSBURY 1
The third quarter belonged to the Freemans, and it turned out to be the difference in the game. Maria Freeman scored with an assist from Kelly Longmore to break a scoreless tie and spot the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Then it was Sarah Freeman turning a pass from Meghan O’Brien into a goal to send the Hawks into the final quarter with a 2-0 lead. The Falcons made it a one-goal game in the fourth quarter, thanks to a goal from Ryan Burdette, but the Hawks held on for the win.
Scoring Summary
1st quarter – No score
2nd quarter – No score
3rd quarter
Maria Freeman (CRS) from Kelly Longmore (1-0)
Sarah Freeman from Meghan O’Brien (2-0)
4th quarter

CR South coach Kelly Cappellano on win: “This was a good battle under the lights. Our team was resilient and played a full 60 minutes. We played as a team and did a better job of connecting our offense and defense. Our midfielders transitioned the balls nicely, and that’s been something we have been focusing on at practice.”
–Props: Elise Lindros did a great job in the midfield taking away key plays with Maria and Sarah Freeman coming in strong at the end. Carly Conetta chased down breakaways, and Kelly Longmore had some great long balls down the sideline. This was an all-around team effort win with defenders Lily Jachimski and Reagan Lewis holding down the back line.”
Up next: Council Rock South (4-2, 3-2 SOL) will host Central Bucks East Friday (5 pm), and Pennsbury (3-3, 2-3) will host William Tennent Friday in a non-league crossover game.

The Pennsbury Falcons hosted Council Rock South for their first night game of the season at Falcon Field. After watching the JV team continue their streak of shut \outs, beating CRS 2-0, the varsity PHS players prepared for battle.
With the sun setting behind the stands, you could hear a pin drop in the stadium during a moment of silence in honor of those lost on September 11 so long ago. Some members of the Pennsbury Marching Band performed the National Anthem, creating a beautiful moment for us to focus on that day we will never forget and to remind us of the gratitude we have to be playing the sport we love.
Both teams came out with a matched energy and determination, forcing the first two quarters to end in a scoreless tie.
“Going into halftime at 0-0 is both exciting and exhausting – you watch them battle so hard for 30 minutes and come away in the same place they started,” coach Traci Curtis said. “We were so proud of how our girls were moving the ball, applying things we talked about at practice, and really coming together.
“We didn’t change too much at that point of the game, but simply encouraged them to continue fighting and playing patient hockey. Our forwards were moving well, our mids were holding their space, and our defense was strong working the ball in transfers and being smart about placement. The passing in all parts of the field was great today, but it was just not enough.”
South busted the 0-0 score halfway through the third quarter when Maria Freeman connected during a scuffle in front of the cage on a penalty corner play, putting the Hawks ahead 1-0. The Falcons did not let down but found themselves in another defensive corner situation four minutes later, and once again, CRS found a way to take advantage of the set piece with a goal by Sarah Freeman. “
South passed the ball really well on their corner plays, and they worked our defense inside the circle in a way that put us on our heels in those moments,” explained Curtis. “They went up 2-0 with four minutes left in the third quarter, and we knew we had to dig deeper and work even harder. It was a great game on both sides of the ball and just an entertaining contest all around.”
The fourth quarter began with the Falcons down 2-0, but they did not give up.
“We are most proud of our team for staying strong, encouraging each other all around, and being in a very energetic, hyped mindset the whole time,” Curtis said. “They truly were playing with gratitude, and it was coming from their hearts.”
The excitement went up a notch in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter when Pennsbury’s Ryan Burdette found the back of the cage during an offensive penalty corner play putting the orange and black within a goal. There was tons of time left to play. The Falcons fought hard and got extremely close to tying the game, but the clock ran out before they could make it happen.
“We managed the clock so much better this game and had solid scoring opportunities in the final two minutes, which was great to see from our unit,” Curtis said. “I am happy with their performance and will take the loss and all the lessons it gives us.
“Just like the Neshaminy game, South only scored on two of ten penalty corners, and those earned set pieces were where they scored. They did not finish from the regular field play, and that speaks volumes about how we are handling our shifting and movement in all of that space during the game.
“South is a talented team who I think we are really well matched with. Do we need to work on defensive penalty corner situations? Absolutely, but I have no doubt our girls will learn and make the adjustments necessary to be successful moving forward. We are not finished and are growing and changing with each game. A day like today helps us to realize that there are things much bigger than ourselves and reflecting on the game with a grateful, positive mindset will allow us to move forward with strength and joy.
“All of our girls had outstanding performances tonight, but senior, Jacqueline Sullivan, earned our Power Of ONE award for her determination and stepping up to the challenge in the back for the entire game.”
Pennsbury will host Tennent on Friday to finish out the three game week.
NESHAMINY 6, BENSALEM 0
Norah Saloky broke a scoreless tie six minutes into the second quarter, using a pass from Kasey Rieger, and the Redskins had a lead they would not lose.
Neshaminy took a 2-0 lead into halftime and added two goals in both the third and fourth quarters.
Rieger played a role in five of the Redskins’ six goals, connecting for a hat trick and assisting on two others. Saloky had a pair of goals, and Ellie Miller also added a goal.

Bensalem coach Gary Kubik on the game: “I’m about as happy as I could be with a 6-0 loss. We played the fourth-ranked PIAA District 1 team to a scoreless first quarter and then another seven minutes into the second. That’s 22 scoreless minutes against a team that will challenge in the playoffs this year. That’s what we focused on after the game.
“We actually had chances to put goals away while it was 0-0 and couldn’t finish. I’m also excited about the whole first half. While Neshaminy was able to find the back of the cage twice before halftime, Bensalem held them to a 2-0 lead until the third quarter.
“I’m very proud of them today, especially that first half. That first half was, defensively, very good for our confidence as we contained, as much as possible, that very high-powered offense of Neshaminy. Offensively, like I said, we had our chances and have to learn how to finish. But the ball movement through the middle of the field was there today in spurts, and we just have to get more consistent with that.”
Up next: Neshaminy (7-1, 5-0 SOL) will travel to Central Bucks West Monday for a battle of division leaders in a non-league crossover game. Bensalem (3-4, 1-4) will travel to Archbishop Ryan Friday for a non-league game.

NORTH PENN 3, SOUDERTON 2 (OT)
In a classic battle between the neighboring rivals, the Knights scored a pair of goals in the final 6:46 to erase a 2-0 Souderton advantage and then won it in overtime on a goal by senior Laura Albert with just 1:15 remaining separating the two teams from a tie.
It was, to say the least, a dramatic ending.
“We needed all the time, and we used everyone,” NP coach Shannon McCracken said. “My entire bench played today. It was exciting.
“It took the whole team today and a never-give-up attitude to capture the win.”
The Indians got on the scoreboard on a goal in the first quarter by Autumn Wagner (Lexi Yanchunas assist). They took that 1-0 lead into halftime and upped that to 2-0 with five minutes remaining in the third quarter when Julia Blair found the cage with an unassisted goal.
Souderton appeared to be well on its way to the win, but things got interesting when – with 6:46 remaining in regulation – Paige Shearer (Ashleigh Barwis assist) cut the Indians’ lead in half with a goal. With just over two minutes remaining, Erika Pickford scored the equalizer with an assist from Allbert, setting the stage for OT and Albert’s game-winner.
“It was a game of perseverance as it would have been easy to give up after falling behind and not scoring until very late in the game,” McCracken said.

North Penn coach Shannon McCracken on the come-from-behind win: “Actually, we were playing a good game. We just didn’t have anything on the scoreboard to show for it. The shots were even, the corners were even. They just capitalized on their opportunities, and we were struggling to finish in the circle.
“This win is a big confidence booster because Souderton is a good team. We’ve had some team talks lately just about some inconsistencies. I really hope this will catapult us in our next few games that we can build on this.”
–The late surge: “When you’re down two, getting one goal in gives you that sigh of relief and that ‘Okay, we can do this.’ I did switch my formation up to put more attackers in, so that sparked the attack, and then just persevering. Our leadership today was strong. Our senior captains – Erika Pickford, Laura Albert and Ashleigh Barwis – were really encouraging on the field and during quarter breaks to stick with it.
“When you go down 2-0 against a very good team that you have good games with from year to year, it can be really challenging to turn it around because it’s easier to fold, so I was just really impressed with that resilience and perseverance the team showed today. We have been up and down a little bit and been a little bit inconsistent, so today it was really exciting to finish.”
–Props: “Senior midfielder Laura Albert had an excellent game and a beautiful reverse shot to win the game. Senior midfielder Ashleigh Barwis had a strong game in the midfield to help transition the ball to attack. Sophomore back Lily Brown was steady defensively to keep Souderton off the scoreboard late in the game.”
Souderton coach Sue Casciato: “‘Obviously being up by two goals with 6 mins to go and not being able to finish is incredibly disappointing. But credit to North Penn – they never stopped working. In all honesty, even though the stats were close, they played a better hockey game than we did today’’
Up next: North Penn (4-2, 3-2 SOL) will host Downingtown East Saturday in a non-league game (10 am), and Souderton (5-3, 3-2) will host Council Rock South Monday in a non-league crossover game.

“South is an extremely athletic team, and it was a fantastic, physical, and competitive game for all four quarters.”
–Props: “Our defensive unit overall really stepped up and implemented what we’ve been working on in practice, so a big shoutout to Kira Mangin, Dhwani Bengali, Alyssa Gobrecht, and Elsa Parsons for really locking down the back half of the field. We only gave up two defensive corners, which was a big point of emphasis for us. Charlotte Gozzard was huge in goal.
“Leah Verespy and Suzan Eraydin were all over the midfield and put our forwards in really good positions to make runs and plays on the ball.”
–Confidence booster: It was great to see the confidence of this group come together today. This was a huge confidence builder. Our conference is incredibly tough, so it’s nice to see how much we’ve improved over the last few games.”

Ierubino capped a big game with a goal after some all-but-impossible-to-defend 3D play.
With the win, the Bucks completed their first go-round in division play with a perfect 5-0 record.
West held a decisive advantage in shots (26-3) and corners (13-5), an advantage that was negated in part by the standout effort in goal of East’s Camryn Puhalla.

Our many scoring efforts were thwarted by the outstanding play of the CB East defense, particularly their goalie Camryn Puhalla.”

LOWER MORELAND 2, UPPER MORELAND 0
The neighboring rivals went into the final quarter of Wednesday’s showdown locked in a scoreless tie. The Lions took care of that not-so-little matter with a pair of goals in the final quarter. Mady Rossiter scored the first goal – and eventual game-winner, and Skylar Lowry added an insurance goal.

4th quarter
Mady Rossiter (LM) 1-0
Skylar Lowry (LM) 2-0
Lower Moreland coach Janet Lutter on the game: “It was a well-played game by all of our athletes. We moved the ball well, were successful with defending our free hits with a solid wall, and our defense led by goalie Jordyn MacPhee shut them down inside the circle. The forwards and mids are really moving the ball and getting into the circle. We had 18 offensive corners today with at least one shot on goal in each one. Upper Moreland’s goalie really had a good game. She had some tremendous saves.”
Upper Moreland coach Pam Remmey on the game: “Going into the fourth quarter, the game was scoreless, but there had been lots of exciting circle play. (Our) goalie, Addi Hurley, had a tremendous game with 14 saves. In the fourth quarter, with several players down in front of the cage, somehow, Lower Moreland scraped the ball across the goal line to make it 1-0. Then a few minutes later, there was a similar situation and Lower Moreland was awarded their second goal.”
–Props: “The Bears’ defense held strong through 18 defensive corners. Julia Gallen and Kelly Bates were amazing in front of the goal, while Izzy Duncan and Mackenzie Reilly played strong, getting the ball out of the circle and up the field. On attack, Olivia Torres, Ella Gould and Melissa Torpey had strong games, but could not score in the circle.”

WISSAHICKON 4, QUAKERTOWN 1
In a battle of last year’s SOL Liberty co-champions, it was the visiting Trojans who had the better of play, opening up a 1-0 halftime lead and then scoring three unanswered goals before the Panthers scored a late goal.
“We were ready for Quakertown because we know they always play a very strong game, and they’re a very physical team, so we knew going into it that we were going to have to bring everything we got, and we really did,” Wissahickon coach Lee Ann Marchesi said. “Everything was clicking. Every single player showed up, and they showed up ready to play a full game. If it took energy to go into overtime, we were going to find an energy source outside of our bodies to make sure we got it done.”
In the first quarter, Kayla Mullin turned a pass from Ava Rocco into a goal, and that 1-0 score stood until the third quarter when Cami Lutte scored her first of two goals, both with assists from Riley Ball. Lutte connected on her second goal in the fourth quarter, and Layla Keller (Sam Farno assist) scored to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead before the Panthers got on the board with 1:06 remaining when Emma Stalletti turned a cross from Cassidy Landis into a goal
The Trojans’ win created a logjam at the top of the SOL Liberty standings. Three teams – Wissahickon, Quakertown and Plymouth Whitemarsh – all have identical 3-1 records in league play.

Wissahickon coach Lee Ann Marchesi on the win: “I’ll remember this game forever. It’s a very rare thing for all the drills, all the prep and all the mindset work they’re putting in and all the togetherness you’re putting in – for it to materialize in the game the way that it did was powerful to watch as someone who’s played the game. It was really pretty.”
The game: “I feel like we did a really good job of dominating possession. They have some really strong midfield players, they have some really strong middle of the field players, so their center forward, their center mid and their center back are very strong. They really took it to us down our weak side – down the left side of the field for a good portion of the game until we really had a second to pull together in the huddle and try to bring things more to our stick side. So, they were bringing everything they could at us, and we just played together from the very beginning of the game until the very end. I just knew when it came together it was going to be pretty, and it was just really a fun game to watch.”
–Props: “Every game, I identify a player or two players of the game. There were so many standout moments in the game that I probably will remember forever. That game was so well-played together. They were excited and building energy off each other winning the balls, so if someone tried a move and it worked, the whole team gained energy from it, and it was palpable from the sidelines. So, I ended up giving player of the game to all of my girls. There wasn’t one standout. The leadership from our captains was great, but even just a cool head from my goalie. When my subs went in off the bench, we did not skip a beat. There was energy, there was a readiness, and there was an intensity about the game, which really is the way we have been practicing and what we were trying to bring, so it all came together because everyone gave everything they had.”
