RADNOR 9, WISSAHICKON 8
If Friday’s game against the defending state champions was a measuring stick for a Trojans’ team with high expectations, they certainly measured up quite nicely, undoubtedly throwing a bit of a scare into the Raptors when they reeled off the first goals of the game.
“We definitely started great on the draw controls,” Wissahickon coach Nicole Fisher said. “Emma Baker, Alexis Hobson, Emma Greenberg and Nora Ryan just did a great job controlling the draw and pushing the fast break.
“Emma Baker had a quick three goals that you could tell changed the tempo, and they had to make some adjustments to their defense. In the first half, our girls did a great job with purposeful and patient possessions. They were taking care of the ball and pushing it. I was so impressed with how they were handling a pretty talented defense. You could tell they were playing tight on Alexa McCabe who had seven goals last night, and you could tell they were making adjustments for Emma Baker.”
The Trojans took a 5-3 lead into halftime. Baker accounted for all five of the Trojans’ goals and finished with all eight goals in a stellar outing.
“It was a phenomenal game for her,” Fisher said. “We were actually up 5-2 with 40 seconds left in the half, and we had a
turnover. They pushed it back down and got a quick goal.
“Coming out in the second half, they made a change in the draw, and they got a quick three draws. They came back and took our momentum a little bit, but the girls didn’t give up. We were tied for a good bit. They went up by two and started trying to keep their possessions longer. They did turn the ball over, and we were able to score.”
Down one with time winding down, the Trojans regained possession with less than a minute remaining.
“We got an interception by Nora Ryan,” Fisher said. “Emma Baker took it in for one last drive with literally 3.5 seconds left. It could have been a goal, and it wasn’t, but that’s okay. It wasn’t in the cards.”
The Trojans’ coach lauded the performance of her defense comprised of goalie Camille Hubbs, Chloe Acuna, Ellie Stein, Amanda Brecher and Emma Reilly.
“Our goalie, Camille Hubbs had a great showing,” Fisher said. “Our defense did a great job at slowing Radnor’s momentum, and they deserve a shoutout. It wasn’t one particular person – it was a whole team effort.”
Despite the outcome, the Trojans’ coach had nothing but good things to say about her squad.
“We know how talented Radnor is, and I think the girls came in with a great attitude that they were ready to show with lacrosse and have some fun, work together, support one another, and I think they really did that,” Fisher said. “Because of that, I think it was a little surprising to Radnor.
“They did an excellent job today of focusing on some little things and making connections with one another. They didn’t let a big name inhibit how they were going to play, and I think it was a very mature showing by us today, well beyond what I’ve seen from a high school program. With all that excitement and so many things going on, I think they did a great job of keeping their composure and just being supportive of each other. It was fun. It was just a fun game to watch, and honestly, it felt like a win.”
Wissahickon (3-1) will host Hatboro-Horsham on Wednesday.

PENNSBURY 19, SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 6
Darrien Furiness scored eight goals and assisted on two others in a glittering offensive performance for the Falcons, who are without Maggie Golder.
“Maggie is currently out with a torn meniscus which is a huge spot to fill,” Pennsbury coach Shannon MacPherson said. “It was heartbreaking news to find out that she would be out.
“Maggie is still an important part of our team. Even though she isn’t on the field, she is still helping her teammates with attack plays and teaching them the draw. She’s such a smart player and still a huge part of our success.”
Also for the Falcons, who led 13-3 at halftime, Grace Holmes had five goals and one assist. Mia Popovitch added four goals. Caroline Mellon and Olivia Graebner each had one goal.
Graebner also had four caused turnovers and five ground balls as well as four draw controls. Holmes and Furiness each had six draw controls. Furiness had five ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Holmes had six ground balls and one caused turnover. Popovitch and Mellon both had two ground balls. Angelina Kenney had two caused turnovers and one ground ball.
“We had a talk with the team about stepping up and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and adapting,” MacPherson said. “The girls all really stepped up and played their role today. It was a true team effort and each one of the girls contributed to today’s win. Darrien continues to be a leader on the field and had some beautiful shots today.
“Darrien is such a dynamic player and a true force on the field, she keeps the girls settled and is such a smart player. We made a lot of adjustments after losing Maggie. Olivia Graebner moved from defense to midfield and she did a great job today with winning the draw and stepping up and learning the attack plays.
“Sophia Curtis has been an important part of our defense and a leader back there with her voice and game sense. Mia Popovitch has stepped up on attack and did a great job driving to goal today, scoring four. Grace Holmes is a freshman and is now taking the draw for us. She connected really well with Darrien and Olivia today. I’m very proud of all of the girls for their hard work today and following the game plan.”
For the Spartans, Maddie McDevitt had two goals and an assist, and Emma Yoder also had a pair of goals. Fiona Rizzo added one goal and one assist, and Shannon Silvius contributed one goal. Emily Smith chipped in an assist. Tess Talbot recorded nine saves in goal for the Spartans.
“We had a lot of faceoff wins in the circle, which I am proud of,” Springfield coach Marissa Conover said. “Emma Yoder and Maddie McDevitt stood out with their hard work up and down the field throughout the game.
“Pennsbury was ultimately dominant in their possessions, and their two standout players scored the majority of their goals.”
Pennsbury (1-1) will travel to Abington for a non-league game on Monday, and Springfield (1-2) will host Springfield Delco in a non-league game on Monday.

The Panthers made history on Friday, notching the program’s first ever varsity win.
“This was very exciting and special to the team because it was the first ever varsity win in school history for WTHS girls lacrosse,” Tennent coach Kate Schaick said. “We hope to continue to keep developing our skills and grow as a team from this.”
The Panthers, who led 5-2 at halftime, were led by the three-goal efforts of Kaylee Tidwell and Angelyna Pisano. One of Tidwell’s goals came with an assist from a goalie clear from Tiana Danas. One of Pisano’s goals came from a draw control.
Sydney Moss added a pair of goals, one with a Tidwell assist. Logan Macanally and Asiyah Davis each added one goal.
“Shoutout to our defenders who did a great job keeping the ball out and transitioning the ball quickly,” Schaick said. “But especially our goalie, Tiana Danas, for stepping up when our goalie is out and never playing a minute in net before and helping to contribute to this win.”
William Tennent will face Plymouth Whitemarsh on Wednesday.
