Call them the comeback kids.
The season is just four days old, but the Hatters have established that they are not going to go down easily. Twice in as many games, they have rallied for dramatic come-from-behind wins. On Monday, the Hatters – who led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth – watched that lead slip away and found themselves trailing 8-6 after six.
They were unfazed, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh. Alicia Tauber delivered the big blow – a two-out, bases-clearing triple down the right field line. Making the sophomore shortstop’s hit even more impressive was the fact that it came on the heels of committing an error to open a four-run sixth that put the Knights on top 8-6.
“When she got around to third base, she said, ‘Are we even now?’” DiFilippo said. “I said, ‘Yeah, we’re even.’”
Maddie Yeager got things started in the seventh with a leadoff single, and her teammates followed her lead. Logan Cummings singled, and then Meg Sonntag came off the bench and delivered an RBI single. Rachel Carney’s RBI single knotted the score, and one out later, Kiley Flager drew a walk to load the bases.
“Brittany Hubler hit a shot that took a hop and hit our runner on second,” said coach Joe DiFilippo of the inning’s second out.
That set the stage for Tauber, who tripled and scored her team’s final run on a wild pitch. Just like that, the Hatters led 12-8.
“That was huge,” DiFilippo said. “We beat Lansdale Catholic 7-6 on Saturday, and we scored two runs in the top of the seventh.
“No matter how bad we played, it takes a good team to come back and win. To do it today against North Penn, which is a pretty good team – it takes a pretty good team to do that.”
All told, the Hatters pounded out 15 hits with every player in the lineup contributing at least one hit. Sophomore Rachel Carney was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Kiley Flagler was 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the third. Tauber was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, and Logan Cummings was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Freshman Grace Daniels earned her first win, allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings in relief of Taylor Sciubba. She allowed a leadoff single in the seventh but retired the next three batters she faced on a popup and back-to-back groundouts.
Hatboro-Horsham upped its early season mark to 2-0 while North Penn is 0-2.

The Flying Cardinals led 4-2 after plating two runs in both the second and third innings, but the Pioneers took a lead they would not lose with four runs in the fourth.
The Cardinals managed just three hits off of winning pitcher McKenzie Gordon, who allowed two earned runs while fanning four and walking two. Theresa Beck threw a scoreless seventh.
For the Cardinals, Sarah Tannenbaum was 1-for-2 with an RBI double, and Erin Gallagher, who absorbed the loss in the circle, was 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
Upper Dublin (0-2) will travel to North Penn for a non-league contest Wednesday.

The Hatters plated two runs in the seventh inning to escape with the non-league win in Saturday’s season opener. Maddie Yeager’s RBI single knocked in the tying run and the winning run scored on a Crusader miscue.
Alicia Tauber had a big day at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two triples and two RBIs. Brit Hubler was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Freshman Grace Daniels allowed just two earned runs in 3.2 innings in her varsity debut. Taylor Sciubba earned the win in relief, fanning nine in 3.1 innings.
“She dominated,” coach Joe DiFilippo said.
